ASTORIA'? RAILROAD CONTRACT,
More Good Words From Our Neighbors
the Press.
.As exdhanges from over the state
coiulnuu to come In, favorable mention
of Astoria's railroad contract Is no
ticed. Following are some of the many
food things said In that regard:
At last Astoria, h&s the contract
signed for the construction of a rall
roiad from that city, to a transconti
nental connection. This Is glorious news
nut only for the Jong-waiting and long-
suffering people of Astoria, but for the
whole of Oregon's population.' The
building of thl9 road will give a won
derful stimulus to the development and
prosperity of all the Oregon coast coun
try, and It will open the way for other
railroads. All (the big lines will have
to get to salt water. This will prove
a great Impetus to railroad development
in Oregon end to 'Che growth Of the
fflaJte. Polk County Observer.
Astoria haa at last got a "cinch" on
a railroad proposition. We hope that
there will be no ohance to back out or
it, and that the fondest hopes of Asto
ria will be reached in the near fu
ture. Heppner Gazette.
Astoria is to have a railroad at last,
The contract for one haa been signed,
and we are heartily glad for Astoria.
Thuit city by the sea lias waited long
and well for a road to connect her with
the outside world, and now. that it
seoms so sure to cohie we rejoice with
her in her good fortune. May the road
be built at once and gilve to Astoria
the one fhtng She needs a ohlance end
her growth wtill be remarkable. Ho
gum Journal.
Astoria Is once more to have a rail-
road, sure. We hope this is not to be
a fake. Her citizens h'ave worked
Ward and faithfully to attain this end,
and should not be disappointed thlls
time. It will be a help to the whole
country, and Ilwaco will be benefitted
by It. Pacific Journal.
THE O. P. SALE.
The Corvallis Times says positive as
surance Is had that at leiaat one bidder
will hi on hand alt the coming Oregon
Faalflo saJe. This Is certailnly encour-
cgiing news. If any reasonable bid is
made at 'the coming siale it should be
confirmed. Failure to do this will be
a serious blow to 'the road, the credit
era and the whole state.
The OorVallls times says: In spite oV
the fact Uiat the Mon'tanla people have
signed a contract to build the railroad
from Coble to AS'.aTia, they are still
swinging: arousd the circle of the Ore
gon Pacific. 'Tuesday Mr. E. Stone and
D. L. Smith arrived in town and re
mained until yesterday, when they
look the O. P. train for Albany. Smith
is a dull engineer, identified with the
Banner and Hammond people, and Mr.
Stone is the man who hla3 been over
the O. P. several times recently. The
first examined surveys, maps, etc.. of
the' general office, and the other took
euoouuts of the earning and expense
of the property. Mr. Stone admitted
fiiankly that his people were looking
over the property to see what could be
done with it, and Said that he would be
in Corvallis on the 21st, Which happens
to be the day before the sale. Albany

TO DOWN SPOOKS.
A wealthy bachelor declared that a
horrid hag had glared at him through
the night. His friends laughed at him
but he insisted that ithe house was
haunted. He grew ill, complaining of
extreme heaviness Hn the stomach, his
appetite failed, he grew sallow, emaci
ated 'and despondent, believing he was
going to die, the spook being a warn
ing, and declared he cculd hear funeral
bells ringing in his ears, and even hint
ed at suicide. A friend induced him to
use Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Dis
covery, and he rapidly grew well,
spooks and all his distressing symp
toms disappearing. A torpid liver and
dyspepsia caused his suffering and the
medlalne cured both. A pamphlet free,
