The Relief went outBlde yesterday and cruised around In searoh of any vessels that might bo In sight and de sirous of making this port. The wide waste of waters to the westward was clear, with one exception. About 10 o'clock the three-masted schooner J M. Coleman, Captain Trainer, from San Francisco to Shoalwater Bay In bal last, was spoken about 15 miles south west of the bar. She reported all well on board. The subsidy committee met yesterday at the appointed plneo and hour then adjourned until 10 o'clock on Monday next. They are all feeling In excellent spirits, and evidently know what thej are doing. From reports circulated during the day It is evident that before the time of the next meeting arrives the town will be filled with railroad men. The. time Is growing short, and If Astoria Is going to have a railroad the contract will be signed In the very near future. . Between the cities on the Sound there Is a great deal of rivalry regard ing the new steamship line which Is to be established between some North American port and the trans-siberlan railway at Vladlvoostot-k, the chief rort of Siberia. Everett clnlms the lead, and Seattle has Just extended her con gratulations. As It will be five years before the railroad Is completed, there la ample time for speculation, and It would not be at all surprising If As toria with her transcontinental railway connections, and great shipping facll itcs, will make a stronghold for the new line. Considering that everything In the way of distance and superior natural harbor advantages are In favor of this port, she will probably get what she reaches out for. The pilot schooner San Jose, afte loading supplies, went to sea yester day afternoon. She struck a compara tively smooth sea outside, only long ocean swell that would not have been noticeable from the mainland. The life of the bar pilot is riot all sunshine, a a great many people ar prone to imagine, for he passes many a sleepless night on the turbulent ocean, and her-; in the city, when the land lubber is toasting his toes before a cheerful grate fire, and listening to the winds howling without and the rain pouring In torrents against the window pane, there 1b little thought of the tiny schooner tossing on the white. oreated waves outside the bar, her half-dozen passengers eagerly watching for the coming of the morn, all on the alert to keep the little vessel's head well to the sea and away from the rugged coast. One pleasant feature about the pilot's life Is, that each has his turn at the incoming vessels, and as each pilot leaves, the remaining ones take turns at the wheel, or act as skipper of the schooner. The San Jose haB braved some heavy orms, and Is certainly a. staunch little oraft, for she always turns up without a scratch. DEATH OF MRS. It comes from pretty good authority that the Umpqua cannery is using Col umbia river labels on their catch of Salmon. It Is said ttnt Al. Reed, of that Institution, secured a number 6f labels that belonged to the old TSagle Canning Company, which once .flour Ished In this city, and that they have bean used for labeling cans of salmon paaked at the Umpqua cannery. The pack this year amounted to something like 40,000 cases. Of course, anyone familiar with the famous Chinook of the Columbia, could not be fooled with the Inferior fish packed at that place. Several fishermen who have been work ing down there this Beason, vouch for the truth of the above, and exhibited labels that were being used.
