Lawton, of Atchison, Kan., being the lowest bidder. The price asked was $3,874, which the department con siders too high. Mr. Luckseth, who has delighted As torians on. many occasions with his per formance on the violin, objects to being styled "Professor." He called at thl; office yesterday and said: "I have tried In vain to stop It, If my 'dad' hap pened to see such a handle affixed to his son's name, he would disinherit me. ' On account of the various attractions the congregation at the M. E. Church was not so large as usual last night, but the services are gaining in inter est. The subject for the discourse was "The Great Invitation." Rev. 22-17. "The spirit and the bride say come." The speaker said in part: "The bride Is the church, and the church Is com posed of the Individual members there of. The spirit says come, and It Is the duly of all professing Christians to go out amd Invite sinners to come to Christ." The doctor stated that he "had received a letter from Ilwaco Bay ing there were 100 conversions In the revival being held there. If Ilwaco can have 160 conversions, Astoria should have 1000, at this meeting. The con victing power of the spirit Is only lim ited by the ability of the church to take care of the penitents." A6 the close of the service a revival choir of ten young persons, mostly new converts, was organized, with L. Peder son as leader. Rev. C. L. THE SALMON TRADE, The San Francisco Her.ild of Trade of a recent date has the following: No business of tiny moment Is pass ing, The trade Is chiefly of a Jobbing charactflj. The situation appears to be in the hands of the Alaska Packers' Association, for outside of it, there are no holdings in first hands. The East reports a steady market, The first car go of this year's pack has arrived out, It was shipped from Victoria, B. C, to to London. A Washington dispatch states that Senator Mitchell introduced a bill pro viding regulations for the protection of salmon In Alaska waters against ex tinction through the inordinate capture thereof. A correspondent writing from the Col umbia river saysj The opinion of all parties interested seems to be that the only way to protect the sturgeon and Falmon industry in the Columbia river Is to have law3 passed prohibtng tho catching of these fish above tide wa ter. Such a law controls the fishing cn th Fraser river, in British Colum bia. Statistics show that while more men are employed in this Industry each year, and. consequently niore fish are caught, the run of fish has steadily in creased In the Fraser river.
