There was a notable gathering at Newark, N. J., e few days ago, which was of a decidedly martial character, and had It been In a border state might well have caused Canadians some niarm. The Irish-American Military Union, composed of Irishmen Whr, fought In the Union army and for France, were In camp there, under arms, and with banners that were dis tinctive and breathed a hope for Ire land's autonomy. The religious ser vices themselves had a strong military flavor, and even the non-mllltant, the chaplain, was presented with a sword and the adornment of a soldier. The free traders are filled with the notion that they can make up the loss In revenue they contemplate through an income tax. They cannot do It, however, by taxing Incomes only In ex cess of ten thousand dollars. The small Incomes are those that yield the bulk of the revenue, because they are the more easily ascertained. The "Hartford Post" says that It was what It calls "the blue stroke" that knocked out the Harvard boys at New Ijondon. And when tho young gradu ated get engaged In a ncwnWK'r of fice and hand In their "copy," they'll meet that same "blue stroke" again, but from a pencil Instoud of nn our. There was not one word about tho "robber tariff" In Mr. Cleveland's extra r.esslon proclamation, Perhaps Mr. Cleveland has changed his mind about the tariff, Just an he changed his mind about the extra session. There Is no mistake abuut the genu ineness of tho good feeling expressed toward Vice-IVesldent Stevenson In the Houth. Ho has nn offices to glvo out. The only one at his disposal was rIvoii to his son. It was Admiral Tryon's fault, It now seems, that tho magnificent ltritlsh Fteel, flagship and four hundred Itrltlnh "hearts of oak" were lost; but ho paid dearly for his error. The coming congress will bo a de cided Improvement upon Its democratic predecessors If It gives tho country even a llttlo bit of wlno financial legis lation. Ex-Speaker Crisp Is no fool, whatever else he may bo. To tlwlwe his posl tlon on the Bllver question might des troy his Influence with the administra tion. Senator Iltll Is kept busy these d.tys watching Tummnny to gee that it doesn't make & deal with tho adminis tration that will leave him high and dry. A RUINOUS LOSS. Why Is It that people In general are so prone to disregard loss of strength. clearly perceptible In bodily shrinkage, failure of appetite, broken rest? Incotn- prehenHible but true. Sheer careless ness, an overweening confidence In the power of nature to recuperate these ure suggestible reasons. One ot-sthe most olservable signals or danger thrown by distressed nature Is waning strength. An elllelent tonic Is tho best safeguard against Impending peril. Among the Invigornnts which modern science hns developed and experience approved Is Hostetter's Htotniu-h Bit ters, and It occupies tho first. Diges tion, renewed by thlB genial stomachic. compensates for a drain of vital force, and a regular action of the bowels and tiiinoull condition of the nerves, Doth insured by Its use, co-oerate In the complete realisation of vigor. From the Boston Post While the walks in the Public Garden were crowded yesterday afternoon about 4.3i) o'clock, people 'near the entrance gntes nt the corner of .Beacon, and Charles streets wero horrified to see a man suddenly plungo a knife repeatedly into his throat and fall to the ground. While waiting for a conveyance an officer questioned tho would-be suicide, who was about CO years of age, as to his name, address, and reason for wishing to end his life, but the man steadfastly refused to give any infor mation regarding himself, lle was taken fo lie Massachusetts General Hospital and surgical attendance given him. Although weak from loss of blood it is probable lie will recover. About 0 o'clock last nigbt a hospital attendant got a little information from him. He said his name was Samuel D , and that he camo some weeks ago from Kew Brunswick. The last few days hit head hat felt queer, and he has been wan dering about thecity, not knowing which way fo turn. What impelled him to commit his rash net he wag unable to say. The above is tho familiar but terrible story of the results of mental derangement caused by overstrain of the nervous system. People who have dimness, headache or back ache, or who are troubled with melancholy or despondent feelings, are already well on the road which leads to insanity and suicide. "Dr. Miles Medical Co.: I cannot find language in which to express my apprccin lion of tho great benclit I have derived from the use of your Restorative Nervine.
