Our Bchool has maintained ' a very high standard of attendance and punctuality throughout the year. The pupils have done well In deportment and the greater part of them have been quite studious. I might say here, that In the third room the pupils have been pushed over a four, year's course in three years, for the past few years, because we locked room in the building. My assistants, Miss Belknap and Miss White, havo labored earnestly during the year, and well merit the praise which is given them. I voice the sen timents of the school, when I say: "We nnve nothing but praise for the School Board. They have been ready at all times, to assist) us and help In school affairs in time of need. The steamer Truckee sailed for San Francisco yesterday morning. The steamer R. P. Elmore sailed for Tillamook yesterday morning. The ship Reaper sailed yesterday for New York. Captain Taylor of the' Reaper and Captain Mcintosh of the Western Belle have mado a bet of $1,000 that each vessel will make as good time as tho other on the, voyage from here to New York. The Reaper sailed yester day and will be followed by the West ern Belle today. The ship Reaper was built at Bath Me., and Is owned by Sewell & Co. of that city. She Is 13D5 tins register and has a general cargo. Tho bark Western Belle, 1169 tons, Is owned by W. II. Besse of New Bed ford. Mass. She Is laden with lumber. Captain Taylor has the reputation of making his ship Invariably carry nil the sail she will stnpsrer under, and also of being one of the be.it ship masters In Sewell's tmploy. Captain Mcintosh came overland to Join the Western Belle, which arrived here in charge of Captain Sweeney. He was formerly master of the Henry Fulling, which was hi3 first command. There Is a difference of opinion, of course. as to the respective merits of the ves sels, and many bets have been made In Khlpplng circles as to which will make the better time. Formal charges were lodged with the city commission ers today against Chief of Police Mertz. Recently the commissioners called up on the chief to resign, but he refused The charges accuse him of accepting1 a gold bag and silver water service from Big Bertha, the confidence queen, with shielding criminals and general Incom petency. Pending a hearing of the charges on Saturday, Mertz was sus pended. " A SOLDIER'S DISGRACE. Roh'o, June 20. The court-martial on Captain Edward Bailey, Fourth infant ry, begun today, Colonel Theakes, Fourteenth Infantry, preslndlng and Captain McClure, Eighteenth infantry, Jndge advocate. The charges include nine specifications. They are principal ly borrowing- money and never repay ing It, gambling, drunkenness and 11 centousness. VIOLATING A CITY ORDINANCE. Portland, Or., June 20. James Lald law, British vice-consul and agent of the Giant Powder Company,, of San Francisco, was arrested today on com plaint of Chief of Police Hunt. The charge made against him Is that he has stored at Fulton Park, within the city limits, a large quantity of dyna mite and other explosives. DISMISSED FROM THE SERVICE. Portland, O., June 20. Arthur A, Porter and David A. Johnson, custom Inspectors, have been dismissed by the Secretary of the Treasury. No reason Is given. Their places have been filled by A. E. Raleigh and Lehman Blum, formerly of Pendleton.. Porter was appointed by Abraham, LOWRATES IN THE EAST. New York, June 20. CThe general agents of the trunk lines met today and decided to recommend to the ex ecutive committee of the trunk lines a special rate of one fair for the round trip to Chicago, and return on special World's Fair excursion trains. MINERS ON STRIKE. Spokane, June 20. -The miners In the Gem and Frisco mines In the Coeur d'Alones havo struck again. It is the old demand of equal pay for skilled and unskilled labor. About 180. men are affected. WARRANT OF ARREST ISSUED. Bolne, June 20. A warrant was today Issued by the United States commis sioner for the arrest of Roberts the soldier who recently killed Private O'Leary at Fort Sherman, SHOOK BY EARTHQUAKE. Charleston, S. C, June 20. A distinct earthquake shock was felt tonight In this city, Columbia, S. C, Savanah, Go,., and other Southern cities. No se rious dainuge is reported. CORNELL BEATS COLUMBIA. New London, Conn., June 20. The Cornell freshman crew won the two mile boat race from Columbia today. Time, 10:08. A little Scotch boy, on being rescued by a !bystander from the dock into which he had fallen, expressed heart felt gratitude, saying: "I'm bo glad you got me out.
