Tho British exhibit at the World's Fair Is naturally a subject of great Interest to American, manufacturers, who are closely scrutinizing its many features with a view to learning what Is calculated to make our commodottes cheaper without encroaching upon the standard of excellence. The exhibits comprehend agriculture, horticulture, live stock, domestic animals, sea fish eries, with a list of researches in ilBhery problem and marine zoology and botany; fish products and appara tus for fishing, mining and metallurgy, transportation, naval warfare and coast dofense, manufactures under all heads, electricity and 1U appliances, fine arts, liberal arts, civil engineering, public works, banking, government and law, music, co-operation, religion, ethnology, archaeology, progress of labor, wom an's work, and exhibits from India. In many Instances the American manu facturer can learn .nothing from his cousin across the pond, but the ma chinery used In the manufacture of textile fabrics, and the secrets In the various Industries in which the British excel, as exposed in nn international exhibition, will doubtless prove a pro fitable source of study. There's the ring of true metal In the following remarks of Governor McKln ley: "I do not credit this talk about hard times. This country hus too many resources nnd too much money. Uestdes that, the people Irrespective of party affiliations would stand by and hold up the president's hnndrt in every possible wny needed. In my Judgment, the duly of the people at this time is to continue In the even tenor of their ways, and all will come out well and right." Those who arguo that the Cuban rec iprocity treaty ought to be abrogated because Mr. lilnlne by shrewd diplo macy compelled Spain to ngree to it against her will, must take the Amort can people for Idtoltt. No better nrgU' munt could be presented for the contln uance of tho treaty, which Is acknowl edged to give us a valuable market that we did not have before the treaty went into effect, and which we cannot retain without the treaty. Mr. Cleveland shows his gratitude to those who elected him to ofllce by saying of their applications for possl tlons: They "have Iwn bewildering In volume, perplexing and exhausting in their iteration nnd Impossible of remomlJi'ralH'w," Starves 'em right, How quickly the relations of men change. A man is one duy a suppli cant; the next dny he becomes a dic tator. That Louisville meeting made some of those who have been certain that the republican party was dead change their minds. The party never was more thoroughly alive, and Its grand principles were never more thoroughly appreciated by thoughtful men. The Chinese in this city did not show much concern regarding the Geary law. Some of them expected that the United States supreme court would declare the law null and void. The Chinese case For the Next Thirty Dajs, To meoi imperative demands, I will offer at such low prices on install- ments, with easy payments, that has been presented ably by Mr. Choate, who Is a partner at ex-Senator Evarts and a popular after dinner speaker. The decision will be found in another column. ' The prospects seem good tor seaside resorts this Bummer. Mrs. .Steel of Seaside contemplates building a cot tage at Necanlcum, and other cottages will be built, no doubt, along the beach. The new secretary of agriculture is a finely educated man, who Is away up In theories; but according to the best obtainable Information the only cropB he ever raised consisted of "fads." The failure of the Emperor of Germany in his effort to dictate legis lation should be a warning to would-be dictators nearer home. If that Cuban revolution had not been so extensively advertised In ad vance, It might have lasted longer and have accomplished more. A great future event will be the pres ldcnt'a catch-as-catch-can wrestling match with congress on the financial and tariff questions. Said an eminent English scientist recently : The danger that confronts the great Ameri can people to-day is not the possible adop tion ot a wrong financial policy tor the nation, or the spread of socialism, or the increase of corruption among public men. All these are baa enough, to he sure, bat they are as nothing compared to the terrible national disease I had almost said national crime of overwork. The mad rush for wealth is set at a killing pace, and thousands fall by the way every year. You are likely to be one of the victims I How do we know ? I find it acts like a charm on the whole nervous system. I have not found its equal in giving immediate relief. Dr. Miles' little Nerve and Liver Bills only need a trial and they will recom mend themselves to he the best pills in the market."
