I1) (The gnUj Smfett. ASTORIA. OBEGON: srsn.vY. ..JDECEMBEE 21, 1890 The shipments ot gold to New York from England, -which amount to several millions per day lately, should have the effect o relieving the present s.tmpcucy in the money market. The telegraphic reports say that doctors declare that IParnell has inherited insanity. Whenever a man devotes his life and energies to the pahtkal emancipation of his country men, there are always plenty to be f ,mid who will pronounce him crazy. There is a telling cartoon on the last page of yesterday's West Shore alu.'h preaches a -whole sermon full of argument in two pictures. One represents a rich man walking be tween two men, and from his coat pvfcet protrudes a foled paper on -winch is printed 'Capital." On either srle of him arc standing two men dressel as farmers, one bearing a tUil labaled "Deduction for Indebted ness" d on the other s flail is the badge "Mortgago Tax." Each is ready to tnke Capital as ho walks between th"ni. The second picture shows Capital passed through unhurt, laugh ing at the two men, each of whoso ilul lias struck the other man, one on the nose nud one on the head, and from both the wounded men the blood is spurting at a lively rate. The moal is obvious. Christmas is almost here, aud as it is the universal custom then to dis lon"o gifts, a word or two may not be out of place. Those persons who give to those from whom they expect prootits in return can hardly lay claim to generosity. More praise worthy is he who kindly remembers tlO50 who are poor and friendless or else such comparative strangers as not to have friends who will remember them on the festive day, and to those convey some timely gifts. The poor and friendless, aud the strangers far from home aud friends are the ones to whom Christmas seems a day of sad uess, when they find themselves unre membered with any token of affection or esteem. Seek out some such worthy people, manifest your remem brance or them by some token of re gard, aud yon will find that you will indeed have a inerry Christmas. Kurlil en's Arnica Salve. Results often lollow the use of Hood's Sarsaparilla. Severe cases of scrofula, upon wlilch other prep arations have been powerless, yield to Uio peculiar curative powers of this medicine. Distressing cases of dyspepsia, excruciat ing complaints of the kidneys and liver, agonizing itch p . and pain of salt LI If rheum, disagree- j aule cases of catarrh, and aches and pains of rheumatism, are cured by Hood's Sar saparilla. It purifies the blood, and at the same time tones the stomach, creates an appetite, and glres strength to every func tion of the body. Give it a trial. General Debility "For four years my wife suffered with large taaaor bunches oa the glands under the arms, and geaoral debility of tho whole .system. She bec&mo so poor in koalta that we wcr on the verge of despair regardlag her recovery. Physicians did not seem to understand her case; at all events she never derived any benefit fronj their treatment. She finally concluded tc try Hood's Sarsaparilla. The Immediate effect was so marked and satisfactory that she continued to take It, and this is tho result: She has gained in weight From 84 to (II Pounds and is stronger and in better health than she has been for years. The bunches under her arms have diminished, and wc believe Hood's Sarsaparilla will bo too much lor them in time." J. J. Koncnoss, 22C Com mercial Street, Boston, Mass.
