Jtfieirfr - -- - x x - - TF - - , P) She gJaUjj fom ASTORIA. OREGON: SUNDAY SEITEMBER 7. 18D0 COXCEXTltATED EFFORT. Oxe ot the most important things to insure succoss in any undertaking is the concout rating of every force on same one thing until it is accom plished. That is Uie trouble with Astoria in general, that there arc so many good and desorving enterprises that call loudh for aid. If there could only be some definite understanding that some particular enterprise should take pre cedence, bo undertaken and fin ished before the next is allowed to make a demand upon the liberality of citizens, there certainly would be more accomplished. There needs to be some controlling organization under whose auspices tbo most important and desirable public enterprises should be brought forward and properly submitted for support. What other organization is as well constituted to do this as the Chamber of Commerce of this city, boiug composed, as it is, of representative and business men, they should be able to decide what enter prise is the most necessary to the prosperity of the city, and having de cided this ioint, other projects should for the tune be held back until by unity of effort and singleness of purpose the improvement under taken is completed and in oper ation. Then let another be under taken and finished likewise. In tiiis way the attention and re sources which we have would not be sj scattered and divided upon several projects, all doomed to failure beause of weak support To be more definite: Lot us decide which is most im lorlant, a sea-wall, an electric railroad, a university, or waterworks, or some one of various other desirable im provements. Which ever of these is dotormined to be of greatest present need and importance let our Chamber of Commerce endorse for precedence and take measures that shall secure the co-operation of those able to assist, until we have the electric road or tlie waterworks or whatever it may be in operation. Tryiug to assist numerous enter prise siniunleaneously spreads public oflbrt out so thin that it must fail of success. Let us all pull together. EscELiiExcn of telegraphic reports, completeness and reliability of local aid marine news, intelligent and can did editorial comments and other es sential qualifications of a first-class daily paper, good enough for a city of twenty thousand inhabitants, though published in one of little more than one-third that number, are the char acteristics of The AsToniAX, and the reason why it is so popular in an in telligent comniuuitv. Peaxce's yearly expenditure ex ceeds SGOO,000,000 with less than 10, 013,000 people, while our expenditure, including pensions, is less than SloO, 000,000 with G3,000,000 people. May be our government is too 4,economi cally administered." Who knows? A Maine porgy steamer recently made a catch of 2,500 barrels of fish in one day; and yet it was said but a few seasons since that porgy fishing on the Maine coast was plaved out According to a Joppa citizen, who has been talking to a Newburyport JYews reporter, there has been more bait caught in the Merrimac river and more vessels supplied, than at any time for ten years. A. C. Ware, of Brunswick, Ga., has invented a fish cleaner. He says the smallest or the largest fish can be scaled rapidly by the use of the ma chine. It consists of two prongs and hooks, almost like a pair of fire tongs, only the edges of the prongs are rough and are slightly curved forward. One end of the machine is fastened to a table, while the two prongs are clap ped around the fish, and it is shoved through the rough-edged knives, tak ing off every scale. SCROFULA Is lh.it impurity of the blood which pro duces unsightly lumps or swellings on the glands of the ncclc; causes painful running sores on the arms, legs, or feet; developcs ulcers in the eyes, cars, or nose, oltcn caus ing Mimlness or deafness; is the origin of pimples, cancerous growths, or the many ot..er manifestations usually ascribed to "humors;" and fastening upon the lungs, causes consumption, and death. Being the most ancient, it is the most general of all diseases or affections, for very few irsous are t ntirely free from it. "7" CURED Jiy talcing Hood's Sarsaparilla, which, by the remaikablc cures it has accomplished, un v.hcn other medicines hac failed, lias prox'en itself to be a potent and pecul iar medicine for this disease. Some of these cures arc really wonderful. If you sdflri from scrofula or impure blood, be sure to try Ilood's Sarsapanlla. " Eery spring my wife and children Jiavc Wn troubled with scrofula, sores break lug out on them in aious places. My little 1 103 three 3-ears old, has been a sevrible .sufferer. Last spring he was ono mass of .sore.s from head to feet. I was advised to use Hood's Sarsapanlla, and wc 2:a e all t.iken it.
