Andrew Carnegie gives the follow ing advice, intended for young men, but which older men may heed to their advantage: "There arc three great rocks ahead of the practical young man who has his feet upon the ladder and is begin ning to rise. First, drunkenness, which, of conrse, is fatal. There is no use in waistiug time upon a young man who drinks liquor, no matter how ex ceptional his talent Indeed, the greater his talents are, the greater the disappointment must be. I do not mean by drinking liquor, the taking ot a glass of beer or wine at meals. It is not necessary for a man to be a total abstainer in order to be temper ate. The rule should be: Never enter a barroom and never drink liquor ex cept at meals. "The second rock ahead is specula tion. The business of a speculator aud that of a manufacturer or man of affairs are not only distinct, but in compatible. To be successful in tho business world, the manufacturer's and the merchant's profits only should be sought The manufacturer should go forward steadily, meeting the mar ket price. When there are goods to sell, sell them; when supplies are needed, purchase them without re gard to tho market price in either case. I have never knoivn a specula tive manufacturer or business man who scored a permanent success. Ho is rich one day, bankrupt tho next Besides this, tho manufacturer aims to produce articles, and in so doing to employ labor. This furnishes a laud able career. A man in this avocation is useful to his kind. The merchan is usefully occupied distributing com cem com eodities: the banker in providing capital. "The third rock is akin to specula tionindorsing. Business men re quire irregular supplies of money, at some times little, at otuers enormous sums. Others being in tho same con dition, there is strong temptation to indorse mutually. This rock should bo avoided. Thero aro emergencies. no doubt, in which men should help their friends but thero is a room that will keep ono safe. No man should place his name upon the obligation of another if he lias not snlucient to pay it without detriment to his own busi ness. It is dishonest to do so. Men are trustees for those who have trusted them, and the creditor is en titled to all his capital and credit For one's own firm, 'your name, your forlnne. your sacred honor;' but for others, no matter under what circum stance, only such aid as you can render without danger to your trust It is a safe rule, therefore, to givo the cash direct that you have to sparo for others, and never your indorsement or guarantee." Scientific A merican. Chinese Justtre. The Chinese have a very summary method of dealing with violators of the law and rogues generally. Punish ment of offenses with them is pretty certain and fearfully severe, whether just or not. During the progress of a large lire some thieves entered a building for the purpose of plundering amid the general confusion. Thoy were observed by the police, who, in stead of following and arresting them, very qnietly fastened the door npon them so that they could not escape. and left them to perish in the burning ruins. There was no trial, no convic tion, but being caught m the perpe tration of a crime they were left to suffer the punishment they had dnred to brave. Such a disposition of crim inals would prove a strong incentive to honesty, or at least a check against improper conduct. Dyspepsia For Sixteen Tears. II. P. Holland, Postmaster, Kockaway Keach, Long Island, X. Y was entirely cured of dyspepsia and rheumatism of sixteen years- stanuing, oy using two Braxdreth's Pills every night for a month. During the month he took them, he gained eight pounds in weight Uraxdreth's Pii.t.s are purely vege table, absolutely harmless, and safe to take at any time. Sold in every drug and medicine store, either plain or sugar-coated. The Government ot India reports that the medical authorities are un able to agree as to whether leprosy is contngious or not The proposed leg islation will, therefore, bo postponed, pending an exhaustive investigation by medical men. It soothes the child, softens tlie gunis, allaj's all pain, cures wind cholic, and is tho best remedy for dlar-rhcea.Twenty-five cents a bottle. . MARINE NEWS AND NOTES. Rascball Games. A letter from the secretary of the Oregon Baseball Club, of Portland, states that the club would be pleased to play here on the 3d of September. Tho suggestion is made that a stock company be formed here and raise a club to join tho league, which is to in clude clnbs from Salem, McMinnville, Tho Dalles and Eugene. A letter from Aberdeen invites the ball players of this city to come over there soon, and offers to pay all ex penses over and back, and hotel bills thero for games on Saturday and Sun dry, and will also put up a purse of S50. It states that the players there are all residents of Aberdeen and not professionals. The invitation is a good one, and should surely be accepted by the Astoria team. ASpendiJ Entertainment. Prof. Gentry's Eoniue and Caniuo Paradox which appeared at the opera liouso last evening was greeted with a large audience, many of whom were children, and all were delighted. The performances ot the dogs and ponies, especially the former, were remark ablo for the intelligence displayed by the animals. Everything advertised and illustrated was duly presented, and it is astonishing how much these dumb brutes can lie taught Every person should see it to-night, and no one can attend withont being inter ested and amused. Go yourself, and be sure to take the children, for the exhibition is truly meritorous. A "oi-r Individual. A few minutes after midnight a drunken individual in Grosbanr & Brach's saloon was very abusive and insulting, and refused to go out Finally, however, ho was put out, and Officer Beaslcy escorted him to Chief Barry's hotel on Genevieve street A Card. Editor Astoriax Allow me to say through yonr columns that Miss Law rence will accept Mr. Welch's propo sition to tho Council last night, and take his $10,000 for all her untaxed notes and accounts. CHAINED HIS CHILDREN. A Russian DrosVr Drircr's Chamber of Horrors. The city of Kostroma has a sensa tion of its own in tho shape of a cruel father. Egor Alexieff Smirnoff by name, and a drosky driver by profes sion, says tho New York Sun. Tho son of Smirnoff, a boy of 10 years, failed to pass tho examination at his school. Being afraid to comohomo with tho report ot his ill success, ho concealed liimself for two days. Bnt his father found him and chained him to the wall of a dark, moist, dirty room, which was full of vermin. In the corner of the room there was a lair of rotten straw. He was kept in that condition for fully six days, until his mother could no longer endure the sight of hi3 suf fering, and took courago to report tho case to the police authorities. The boy was liberated and taken to the hospital, and his father was arrested. On further examination tho room in which tho poor boy was chained was found to be a regular chamber of hor rors. There were rings fastened to the ceiling and in the floor by which Smirnoff would hang up his children by their hands and feet, or stretch them in such a manner that they could not struggle or protect themselves when he inflicted chastisement on them with a knout. Six years ago Fred McConnell, aged 15, of Washington, Pa., saw a circus performer eat glass, and it so pleased him he determined to learn to do it The first attempt made him sick, but since then he has experienced no ill effect, though ho is no taller than a boy of 8 or 10 years. JGpocIi. The transition from long, lingering and painful sickness to robust health marks an epoch in tlie life of the indi vidual. Such a remarkable event is treasured in the memory and the agency whereby the good health has been at tained is gratefullv blessed. Hence it is that so much is heard in praise of Elec tric Bitters. So many feel thoy owe their restoration to health to the use of the Great Alterative and Tonic. If j-ou are troubled with any disease of the Kidnej-s, Liver or Stomach, of long or short standingyou will surely find re lief by use of Electric Bitters. Sold at 50 c and Si per bottle at J, "W.
