Tkbse are twenty-two Democratic governors of states and twenty Bcpnb liceas. All the ex-slave states and Iowa, Montana, New Jersey, New York. Ohio and Oregon have Demo cratic governors. ArxisosrRwho escaped from the Tattnall comity, Fla., jail recently, left a note for the sheriff saying that he was innocent, but that he would be back in October to stand trial, and hoped to be acquitted. Tke present administration is not saoch on the talk. No member of it aakes political speeches, or writes pol itical letters, or discusses politics in in terviews. It is in wonderful contrast to the previous administration. Tke Grand Trunk Hallway company has decided to begin the construction of a second tunnel under the straits, at Port Huron. 3Gch.t ,at once. The mt tanncl-will be a dnplicato of the c already under way and will cost $3,000,000. Evert street leading out of Maiden, Maas is guarded, and every team going out of the town is inspected. This condition of things is due to the pest, called the gypsy moth, which is rapidly devouring the leaves. The citizens are fighting it The city of Elizabeth, N. J., while supporting a legalized race track, is considering the advantage to be gain ed by cutting off its appropriation for poor and alms, leaving no help to the impoverishes sick except such as they can get at the Almshouse. Telegkatiiio announcement of the increase of salaries of pestoffices, as given on first page, shows that Astoria has been raised from a salary rating ot $2,000 to S200, which shows sub stantial advancement The free postal delivery by letter carriers will soon follow. Capt Anson, of the Chi cagos, is a good example. He is now playing his twentiellrseason of base ball. His hand is as strong and steady, his eye as sure as it was twenty years ago, with every prospect of re maining so. He has made a success financially ot baseball, being worth perhaps 50,000. But he never had to be paid a large sum of money In ad dition to his salary for keeping sober, sts has happened with other famous players. Louisiana will again cover herself with infamy by passing the lottery bill, s it yesterday passed the lower bouse by a vote of G6 to 29. The Louisiana lottery has bankrupted aany a man, been the cause of many saicides, and led hundreds to ruin, by the infatuation or attractive charm it throws around its con fiding votaries. Thousands of week minded people invest their last dollar o hard earned money, hoping to win a prize, only to find in aearly every instance that they have lost Even it Louisiana disgraces herself b continuing the rascally concern, each state should endeavor to protect its citizens , from being duped by the deceitful promises held out by this grasping, greedy lottery association. demoralized by a lottery craze. It seems that an operative in one of the hat factories drew a big prize in the Louisiana Lottery recently, and a large proportion of the 5,000 opera tives in Daribury have been buying lottery tickets ever sinee. The craze has gone to such an extent that bus iness is interfered with. Families suf fer and storekeepers complain loudly. All the working people are talking lottery and it is not the poor alone who buy tickets. It is estimated that Danbury has lost more money in this manner than from all other calamities put to gether for a long period. There is reason to behove that the prize re ferred to was allowed to go to Dan bury to revive drooping interest, as it is openly chnrged that the lottery managers shrewdly drop a prize in communities and among classes of worHugmen where it will excite the gambling instinct Not long ago a prize was drawn in ibis way, doubtless, by a Boston barber, and it is said to j.ve .' i ae worst thinr that ever i -u. i o OrtrOe - in thi-. cily. The auiohug hiotinct ia strong in human nature, and an institution which pan ders to that instinct and provokes it where it would not otherwise be aroused is a curse to the whole nation. Our government ought to be suffici ently paternal to prevent the ignorant and credulous from being victim ized in this way. The business is largely done through the mails. Merit "Win. We desire to say to our citizens that for years we have heen sellin Dr. Kmc's Xew Discovery for Consumption, Dr. King's Xew Life Pills, Buklen's Ar nica Salve and Electric Bitters, and have never handled remedies that bell as well, or that have given such univer sal satisfaction. "We do not hesitate to guarantee them every fine, and we stand ready to refund the purchase price, if satisfactory results do not fol low their use. These loniedics have won tiieir great j,opularity purely on their merits. J. "SV. foux, Druggist. AH the Choicest Delicacies, made hv only first-class men at the Seaside xiakery. Ax eastern exchange has the follow ing idea: The considerable propor tion of steamboat collisions which have occurred about four o'clock in tbe morning, has led to a most excel lent suggestion in the direction of diminishing this class of ocean dis asters.
