Many claims that were taken, but not paid for "will be retaken, and the activity In timber speculation will probably exceed that of last year. Salmon on tbc SacraneBto. There are now about sixty-five boats on the Sacramento river. The fisher men report the run to be rather light and tho boats do not average more than four salmon each per day. About a third of the boats ship their fish to this market by steamer. Tho fishermen say there are indications of a large run of salmon and they are makiug arrangements in accordance with their predictions. The Black Diamond and Martinez canneries will require a large quantity of salmon if the run proves to be what is expected. S. F. Herald of Trade and Grocer and Caiincr, March 28. A New Youk adventurer induced a fortune-teller to "foretell' to a rich widow that she would be married to a young man whose description fitted him exactly. By and by he came along, and the widow, recognizing her intended husband, married him. He remained with her long enough to borrow $3,000 and then skipped. The London Gazelle has tendered to Parnell an apology for its action in republishing from day to day as they came out tho charges made by the Times that the Irish leader connived at crime. For this purpose we would allow deductions of all indebtedness on notes and mortga ges already contracted up till the time they became due; also we would sug gest deduction of only fifty per cent of indebtedness the first year after the law went into effect, and thereafter none, except as above stated on obliga tions not yet matured. John Mum, ascientific man, who has been making practical examinations in Alaska and of the Behriug strait and sea regions says, in relation to the bridging ot Behring strait, which has been generally ridiculed: "Sen ator Stanford's girdle ot steel around tlie earth via Behring sea is a per fectly feasible scheme. Behriug sea can be bridged. It is only thirty miles across in the narrowest place, and there arc three islands strung along it This would divide the bridge up into four divisions. But, besides this the water is very shallow. In many places it is not naore than twenty feet deep. I under take to say thnt if a man were strong enough to take ono of California's redwood trees in his hands, he would put it down anywhere over the GOO miles of Behring sea and yet have 103 feet of it left above the water. This shows how easy, it would bo to bridge the straits. Tho only trouble would be from floating icebergs, but that could be easily overcome by con structing swinging bridges like they have aeross the river at Chicago. In this way the strait could be kept clear all tho time, and trains could run right along." A Safe Investment.
