December 16th. lSSa, at 7 :30 o'clock r. m for the purpose of electing a board of directors for the ensuing year and transact ing any other business that may coma be fore the meeting. By order of the President. -: l .: ' . H. PLATH. Secretary, An Honr of Thrilling Peril. "Winnipeg, Dec. 12. A citizen just arrived from the Pacific coast tells of a thrilling accident to the Canadian Pacific through express in the moun tains. A rail gave way at a point on the mountain side high above the Colombia river. The engine passed over safely, but the two coaches fol lowing swung about and toppled over. The bank was almost perpendicular, and tho cars would have tumbled several hundred feet into tho river had it not been that the coupliug twisted around and held the tremen dous weight. There were tho cars, ono with its load of passenger sus pended over tho abyss. Tho weight of the engine and balance of tho train prevented tho suspended cars draw ing the whole train down. The suspense was dreadful. Tho frightened passengers were compelled to remain in their perilous position until the train hands built a platform around and underneath the hanging cars, enabling all to make their escape. Tho place where the accident occurred is considered the most dangerous in the mountains. Greut Pi'oQts of Elevator. The purchase by English syndicates of 75 grain elevators on the Chicago & Northwestern railroad, and of eight large elevators owned by Mungor, "Wheeler & Co. in Chicago, has brought to light tho enormous profits realized by tho elevators, and gives at least a partial explanation of tho im poverishment of tho western farmers. The promoters of the English com pany which purchased the 75 eleva tors, in offering tho shares for sale in London, state that the profits in 1886 were 28 per cent, of tho purchase price, in 1887, 22 per cent, and in 18o8. 30 per cent. As a result all the shares were promptly taken. Iven tho fig ures do not give a full view of the percentage of profit on the invest ment, for the elevators are sold to the English middlomen at a price far ex ceeding tho amount originally in vested in them, tho. difference repre senting tho value of the monopoly or, in other words, the value of the exclusive right of milking the fanners dry. Thcso middlemen must have a fat commissigand the companies which buy from them are capitalized at a sum far in excess of the purohase price. Thus the English investor will expect thes3 dividends on a still larger sum than was represented by the American owners and will attempt to squeeze still more out of the farmers in order to seenro them. Seattle Press, 11. Ladies will find relief from headache, costiveness, swimming in the head, col ic, sour stomach, restlessness, indiges tion, constant or periodical sick head aches, weakness in th3 back or kid neys, pain in the shoulders and differ ent parts ol the body, a icoiing or las situde and despondoncy, by taking Simmons Liver Regulator. It is not unpleasant, is purely vegetable, and is not injurious to the most delicate con stitution. An Ocean Lumber Raft. The Fort Bragg Lumber company, of San Franoisco, is now about to try tho Goldy boom, whioh has been in successful operation on tho great lakes for about three years. Accord ing to this plan, a raft will be con structed of thirty-two pieces each composed of seven sticks chained to gether and arranged in a semicircle, within whioh the logs that are to be towed will be placed. Tho Goldy boom will bo supported by strong cross chains and for and aft chains. By this means 1,500,000 feet of lum ber can bo brought down, or much more, if the circle is enlarged. The largest Joggms raft, constructed in the shapo of a cigar, contained 3,500, 000 feet of logs. If this method is successful, a largo sawmill will be built on tho water front, probably at Alameda. It is said that it will re duce tho expense of shipment 32 or moro a thousand feet Budtlcii'sArmca Salve. The Best Saxvk in the world foi Cuts, Bruises, Sores, Ulcers, SaltRheum, Fever Sores.
