Astoria Iron Worts. i AND AtXi SKIN DISEASES A Prosperous Community. Deep Kiver lie3 in the western end of Wahkiakum County, and is navi cable for a distance of five miles by steamboat from the mouth. Its name is well chosen, as it has a depth of from thirty to one hundred feet of water from its month to the head of navigation, for steamboats. Deep Kiver has been settled tor thirty years, Mr. George Gorey be ing the pioneer settler, and who is still a resident here. In the last five years Deep Eiver has settled up very fast, there being now on tne luver about eighty settlers, almost all of whom have fine places. The bottom lands aro very rich and produce good crop3 every year. Ly ing next to the bottom lands and along the main river bank are hun dreds of acres of fine tide lands, which when dyked in will make mo3t valu able places. Deep liver is divided into three school districts, with three good school houses, the total number of sholars attending school being sixty five. The term of school lasts for three months, and is sometimes held longer by private subscription. There are two stem boats plying between Deep Kiver and Astoria, makipg two trips a week, one of them carrying the mail. Astoria is the ceutral point for this section of tho country, mostly all or the trading and business is doue there. Deep River has a large country back of it known as the Salmon creek and Na sel river. This section is also set tling up very rapidly. There is con siderable farming beiug carried on there and some of them have nice places. Logging is also carred on to quite an extent on the Nasel, and is the principal business done there There are ten camp3 running there that give employment to one hundred men. The outlet for this section of the country, to Astoria, is by country road to the fork of Deep River, at steamboat landing, notwithstanding this road has only been open one year, there is already a big travel this way. The writer is also informed that the people of tho Willapa sec tion, which is ten miles north of the Nasel, have cnt a road from that place through to the Nasel to connect with the Deep River road, aud.ex pect soon to have a mail route through to Deep River and on to Astoria. When this route is established which will soon be, the people of the Willapa can reach Astoria in one day, the distanco being sixteen miles from tho Willapa to Deep River, and thirty miles to Astoria, thus reducing the distance on the Oysterville route fifty miles, and also saving consider able traveling expenses. With all these advantages Deep River still holds the key to the out let for hundreds of millions of feet of timber, which lies to the north and within four miles of tide water. All tho timber land that is surveyed is all taken. Some of the most promin ent business men of Astoria and many others are holding claims here, and there aro still thousands of acres of unsurveyed timber land left, which, when surveyed, will be at once taken up. In the near future there will be railroads built to tap this timber, which will be hauled to Deep River, and from there it will be shipped to market. Deep River, surrounded as she is with all these natnral advantages, and peopled witH.fi live, wide-awake community, will step to the front in tho near future, as one of the largest and best business points in the coun ty.
