Tun new Catbobc university in
"Washington will have every afternoon
during the year, at 4:30 o'clock, a lec
ture on a popular topic, to which ad
mission will be free to everybody by
admission tickets, which can be ob
tained without difficulty from the vice
rector.
Wiien tlte new Chinese minister
comes to Washington, where he is ex
pected within a month, he will bring
his wife with him; and this will be
the first instance where the wife of an
envoy from the Celestial Kingdom has
ever accompanied her husband to this
country.
At Decatur, Texas, lately, Eph
Huffman was tried in the district
court for horse theft The conrtroom
is used on Sunday as a place of wor
ship. Sunday morning duriug the
services the jury returned a verdict
The prisoner was brought in and sen
tenced to five years in the peniten
tiary, after which the services were
resumed.
Ax English scientist has been mak
ing experiments to determine the
important part which light plays in
the development of animal life. A
dozen tadpoles were confined in a
box from which every ray of light
was excluded. The result was that
only two of them developed into
frocrs. and these were shortlived. The
others increased considerably in size
but never left the tadpole form.
"We cannot afford" says an ex
change "to suspect everybody because
certain persons have deceived us
There are such things as honor and
integrity in the world, and it is for
us, intelligently and reasonably, to
look for them and find them. When
men cease to trust each other the
foundations of society will be dis
turbed." " Yes, and good real estate
security has a powerful influence to
prevent snspicion, consequently who
ever trusts cannot afford to do so
without the security.
A LADY essayist is convinced that
at least one-quarter of the work per
formed by women is unnecessary, and
that the world would get on quite as
well without it. It is like the otto
man cover she once saw a lady work.
The lady was all bent up, and was
putting her eyes out counting stitches.
"I don't get any time for reading,"
she said plaintively, as she picked up
some beads on a needle; "you must
' have a great deal of leasure." And
yet she had spent more time embroider
ing a ridiculous dog on a piece of
cloth than would have sufficed to read
twenty good books.
Mrs. John -A. Logan scouts the
idea of her appointment as pension
commissioner. She says: "I would
not consider such an idea for a mo
ment, and do not think thni the presi.
dent or anyone in power has ever
done so either. I have too keen an
appreciation of the duties and respon
sibilities of the office, and of my own
unfitness .to- assume "them or even to
thiuk of it. for a moment, even if the
place were offered me, which is ab
surdly improbable. I think the office
of. commissioner of pensions is one of
the best gifts the government has to
offer in point of importance. In my
opinion it requires a man of marked
ability to fill this position. T think
there will be no difficulty in finding a
good man for the place."
A CALIFORNIA. SENSATION.

grown -within a few months till they aTo now
really sensational. Tho way tho fame of this
production has spread is simply marvelous.
Six months ago it wac unknown. To-day It
Is all over the coxmtry. It is authoritatively
ctated that they have been actually giving: It
cway InSan Francisco to people aulicted with
dyspepsia, sick headaches, indigestion and
liver troubles, not to be paid for unless it
cured. Such practical tests aro so Btartllngly
convincing as to be almost sensational It is
stated that two of tho active principles of tho
new remedy belong to tho vegetable kingdom
of California and arc so -weTi known to us all
under common names that it would surprise
us If told them.. But wc arc not surprised at
anything Californlan, and this recent discov

astonishing possibilities cf a soil and cilmato
like ours.
