HUSTLER, City Treasurer and Tax Collector. Astoria, July 25, 1889. Ill THE BUBNED 0ITY. Spokane Falls, W. T., Aug. 7. The thoroughfares iu the burnt dis trict presented an animated appear ance to-day. Several hundred tents were erected for business purposes, and the ludicrousness of the situa tion, coupled with the avowed deter mination and the unmistakable evi dences of earnestness on the part of the moneyed men of the city to re build on a grander and more sub stantial scale than before, kept every body in a remarkably good humor. Hundreds of laborers are at work clearing up the streets, removing the debris from the ruins, cleaniug brick and making preparations for building. There is no scarcity of labor yet, but it is presumed there will be room for more men. Hundreds of men in the city are still without shelter. While a few of these undoubtedly are vagrants, and some are known to be iunb!ei.-, with out occupation.since the tire, prob ably a very large majority are honest laboring men, who are burned out of numerous lodging- houses, with which & portion of. the burnt district abounded. These are shelterless not so much from lack of money asiu the lack of sheltering facilities now ex isting. In some of the large build ings in the east end of the city, sueli unfortunates uio allowed to occupy floors at night, which they do large ly. Livery stables, too, afford shel ter to' many. Lumber piles aud cov ered drivewaj a underneath the mills extend their hospitality. A large number gather iu groups near the railroad tracks, where they pass the nights seated on ties or logs around a bivouac Are, and a, very large num ber sleep under the trees on the flats west of the city, or under the ap proach to the bridge on the north side. So far as the police have ob served them, they appear to be well meaning people generally, and there fore are not disturbed. The Spokane Falls Telephone com pany, which also operates the eastern Washington and Northern Idaho tele phone systems, lost their entire plant in the First National bank building, which included switchboards and office appnr'enances. together with about 100 miles of wire, six miles of poles, and about 200 instruments. The loss was so complete that none but the outlying districts, with their connection with territorial systems, remain intact. The damage sustained by the company is estimated at about 20,000, upon which there was no in surance, except upon the office and exchange figures. pkopiiE everywhere: Confirm our statement when we say that Acker's English Ilemedy is in every way superior to any anil all other prepa rations for the Throat and Lungs.
