The Johnson-Locke Mercantile Co., o San Francisco, in their salmon cir cular jnst issued, stated that the Alaska salmon pack is materializing far below the expectations of the buy ers in San Francisco. For the last week information has been anxiously looked for from Alaska, as the early vessels were due. We are, says the circular, now in receipt of advices from the different canneries lying along the southern side of the western peninsula, taking in Kodiak island and the adjacent shores and Cook's inlet. This is that portion of Alaska where fully 65 per cent, of the fish canned in 'hat dis trict is put up. We quote A B. Cut ler, of the Cutting Packing Co., who has estimates of all the Alaska packs, statinc that, including all the new canneries, the pack is considerably behind last year at the corresponding date. The total number of case3, accord ing to Cutler's advices up to June 17. aeeresrates 29.900. Up to June 22 of last year, theKarluk cannery alone had packed 22,255 cases, and yet we find some twenty canneries packing this year only 8,000 cases more than a single cannery packed at almost a corresponding date ot-last year. In Kodiak island strikes are re ported, while the Aleutian Island Fishing Packing Co.'s trap has been totally destroyed. The following ia the reported pack up to June 15, of the following can neries: Knrluk Padking Co., G.500 cases; Aleutian Island Fishing & Packing Co., 6,000; Alaska Improve ment Co., 4,200; Arctic Packing Co., 3,000; Hume, 1,000; Foard & Stokes, 1,200; Alaska' Commercial Co., Chief tain cannery, 200; Kodiak Packing Co., 700; total. 22,300. The fignres given above need no comment. The packing is ruuniiig enormously behiud the expectations. The Sacramento river iu this state also shows a shortage of about 25 per cent as compared with last year. WUIiont Health can not be enjoyed. THEREFORE USE IAEALTH ..A'3Sfc II VS1CIAX AND SUKGKON. A great deal of this land is as ferule as the bottom lauds of tne Willamette valley, and nearly all of it would in time be converted into homes for an industrious and pros perous population. Good roads and good schools would be the result, and the Nehalem country would be come one of the most fay.ored por tions of the state. As it ' is, if the locators are allowed to complete their purchases the valley, fjeven- when the timber is taken off at the convenience ot the mill men, will be under the curse of absentee landlordism, and the material, educational and moral progress of the people will be retarded by a set of property owners who will oppose the building of schoolhouses, roads, or auything that ia liable to increase their taxes. The Nehalem settlers should organize to resist such a consummation. The law gives them ample opportunity and if they neglect it they deserve the fate that awaits them. Section 2, Gen eral Land Office Circular, under the head of "Timber and Stone Land." says: "The land must be valuable chiefly for timber or stone, and unfit for cultivation if the timber were re moved." This is the clear interpre tation of the law as given by the sec retary of the interior in the latest land office circular. Organize, secure the numbers of the land filed upon, appoint committees to bxnmine it, aud send your representatives to Or egon City whenever theruia a proof to be made, preparedu swear that the laud is fit for ciftfivaliou i the timber woro removed. There ib no use of growling and cpfaing tho tim ber thieves if yon let Sid with that, but if you go at it frrwe right way you can soon clear it ofn curse that otherwise will rest upon it for gener ations.
