t gustafo AST0B1A. OREGON: -WEDNESDAY- J ONE 1? U : AS IT GOES Os her last trip down the s'teBinW Oregon toot to San Francisoo, arrW in2 last Friday, 1,000 tons ol wheat The 0. E. & N. Co., gets $2.50 a ton to take this Oregon -wheat to San Francisco. This S2.50 a ton ia paid it in this instance by Balfour, Guthrie & Co., of Portland. The 1,000 tons will be loaded foreign in San Francisoo. Under a different system that 1,000 tons of wheat and 100 other 1,000 ton cargoes would be loaded at Astoria, and the profit, for of course there is a profit, would be divided between the O. B. & N. Co., Portland and Astoria. Under the present system the com merce of the Columbia is wrongfully diverted. The Astobian in comment ing on these matters always states ex act facts: it chooses its words and says nothing that is not capable of direct proof, or that admits of successful contradiction. Such firms as Balfour, Guthrie & Co., can write ordering The AsiOEiAJf discontinued, all they like. The.As- tobiax does not concern itself as to their patronage, and any one who does not desire to subscribe for this paper as a business proposition and for the information it contains need not do so. The Astobian has no feel ing in the matter, beyond desiring to show that the existing system of ship ping grain is not on public business principles. It is slightly surprised that those in Portland who know better and who are acquainted with the facts should aid in' perpetuating so unjust and unbosiness like a sys tem. They aid it by silence, as much as by sarcastic reference or caustie con tradiction, at the same time knowing that what The Astobian asserts is the exact truth. A CASE IN POINT. One of the industrial wonders of this wonderful state, says the Oregon ian, ilwhy it will not pay to make butter in Oregon, while it pays to ship the article into the state from Califor nia and Iowa. The shutting down of the McMinnville creamery a few days is noted. The Reporter of that town says the market is overstocked to an alarming degree and that several thousand pounds of a first-class prod uct now on hand cannot be disposed of except at a loss. Will some saga cious middleman tell the publio why this is thus, as neither the producer at one end of the line nor the consumer at the other is ablo to fully under stand it? James Gobdon Bennett, while at Monaco, just before his late depar ture for Egypt, had a quarrel with the princely ruler of that famous gam bling resort, and the princeling gave orders that the American millionaire should bo excluded from the borders of the principality. Now, as all the world knows, the palace at Monaco stands on a great rock overhanging the Mediterranean. Mr. Bennett's yacht lay near at hand, and, after the quar rel, he went on board and spent the night in steaming up and down in front of the castle with the foghorn blowing every other minute. The disturbed prince next morning made peace with his old friend, and Mr. Bennett returned to Monaco. The Rothschilds, who control the northern railway of France, state that the six days' system has been ex tended and will be extended still further. Tho directors state that they intend to exercise their right of cen sorship over the immoral literature sold by Hatchette's on the railway bookstalls. The six-days week will vet be the watchword of labor through out the world. It will be rather odd if it should fall to the lot of the Roth schilds, themselves children of Israel, to graft-the most distinctively Mosaic of all the commandments upon the social economy of modern Christen dom. The Astobian believes that a sub scription -paper for stock in the Asto ria and South Coast railroad circulat d in Salem, Albany and McMinnville would meet with satisfactory response. Their interests and our interests are identical. They need railroad outlet to the sea, and will, doubtless, co-operate in any practical means toward such desirable end. Sixty. Mohammedan eunuchs, for merlv owned by prince Baelb Bueby of India, compose tho crew of tho English steamship St. Fillians, now discharging a cargo from the island of Elba at Philadelphia. Prince Baelb Bueby is a wealthy chief living in the interior of India. Secbetabt Busk said in a late in terview, in reply to an intimation that he was not conducting himself with sufficient dignity for a cabinet efficer: "If I were president I couldn't k help having some fun now and then." The following is from yesterday's Oregenian: A regular meeting of the board of trade was held last evening, president Donald Macleay in the chair. The matter of the libeling of thoship Borrowdale for pilotage and the effort being made by the pilots to perpetnate the old rates came np for consideration. Mr. McKee said that if the O. E. & N. Co. did not wish to fulfill their contract with the board, they would be placed in a most awkward position. Some discussion followed, and the failure of the O. B. & N. to have a tug at the bar was considered a violation of their agreement, whioh was a matter of deepest interest to the board. The matter of appointing marshals for this city and Astoria, to look after sailor boarding-houses, also came up for dis cussion. It was stated that no support could be looked to from Astoria in carry ing out the law in this matter. The marshals will, however, be state officers, and can enforce the law at As toria as well as here. It was finally decided that a committee be appointed, to report the names of two persons suitable for marshals, and also an attorney be employed by the board to supervise and direct these officers, and, also to look after the suit against the Borrowaaie, ana a motion to that eueot was carried, It would bo interesting to know who it was that stated "that no sup port could be looked to from Astoria in carrying out the law in this mat- I ter," and what were his grounds for uttering such gratuitous insult It seems impossible for our Portland brethren to discuss commercial mat ters' without a little side whack at Astoria, and they always make them selves ridiculous. U.E SENT IT EAST. For a year I was troubled -with pains la my back and aide, and headaches, the re sult of liver and kidney trouble. I vm attracted to Joy's Vegetable SarsaparlUa, by the startling testimonials In the pa pers. They seemed so practical I was In duced to try It, knowing that as It was purely vegotable.'lt would do no harm. It acted as a gentle laxative. After the second bottle my palniand aches disap peared. It did so much for mo that I sent several bottles to my family la New Jersey, who also took It with tho most satisfactory results. Master Caulker, toot Clay, Ban Francisco. BGAIi ESTATE TBASSFERS. J.
