The stories from Johnstown ot the great disaster which overwhelmed the whole of Conemaugh valley and destroyed so maDy lives, are still read with pninfal interest, and the magnitude of the devastation wrought seems almost incredible. The popu lation of the wrecked towns just be fore the flood is closely estimated at: Conemangh, 2,500; Woodvale. 2,000; Johnstown, Cambria City nnd Cone maugh borough together held a pop ulation of upward -of 30,000. The ground covered was about seventeen miles in extent, and all improvements have been practically destroyed. JohnBtown is a desert with several small running streams passing through its streets, with wreckage in the center nnd having a fringe of human bodies. The few houses re maining have been turned into hos pitals. There are twenty dead houses in all. Each morgue keeps a list of the dead, but no total has yet been added and the number recovered is yet unascertainable. Johnstown was really not a city. It was not even a village. Johnstown was n collection ot boroughs, the main mass of houses itself being divided into seperate little boroughs, so that when this calamity fell, there was no one to take immediate charge and rule, so there has been confusion where order should have reigned. But that condition is now well passed and the work has assumed a syste matic form that will succeed in bringing the best results out of the terriblo state of affairs. At Kernsville about one hundred and fifty houses are standing where once stood one thousand. No large buildings in what was once a thriving little boroueh have escaped. One thousand people is a low estimate ot the lost from this town. -Only about twenty.five able-bodied men remain, and the streets hold a mass of debris from which foul smells arise. In the part ot the town where both rivers and Stony creek havo done their worst there were found.within twenty four hours, almost one thousand bod ies, which have been recovered or are in sight. The place is one great re pository of the dead. Below the iron works is Cambria, a sub-borough, iu which district resid ed probably two thousand people. Mere the scenes are out a repetition of other Darts ot the flood-wasted city. In Columbus church, a new structure, which was flooded to the depth of six feet in the auditorium, the water had receeded, and the floor was covered with slimy ooze to the depth of seven or eight inches. The Pennsylvania railroad is lay ing tracks from Johnstown station to the washout. A temporary bridge is being built, and this evening trains will be run into Johnstown. Com munication by rail has been estab lished between Pittsburg and the end of the stono bridge. Assistant super intendent Trump is on the ground, and is authority tor this news. He knows nothing of the condition of tho track between Johnstown and AI- toona. In some places it is said the tracks wero scooped out to a depth of twenty feet. The Pennsylvania rail road loses thirty-live engines and many cars. Herbert Webber, the guard of the South i ork club, says he repeatemy notified the club of the leakages in the dam. He was called a croaker, and told to shut up or he would be bounced. A month ago Webber laid a complaint about the dam before the mayor, and told him the dam must give way with the spring freshets. Three days before tho cal amity Webber says the water forced itself out through the interstices in the dam and came down like a water snout On Friday morning at 11 o'clock Webber says he noticed the wator behind the dam lowering. He ran aoross the country to tho dam, and the water was welling out through the foundations. He was helpless, and compelled to stand and see the cradual development ot the awful flood. According to him it was 12:45 when the center of the dam gave way. At one o'clock the top of the masonry arch fell in and sent the great lake foaming away to devastate the valley, He watched the lake from tho bank till he could see the bottom, fifty feet below him. He was paralyzed with terror. He thinks that but fivo min utes passed. The Sportsman's association, which owned the Sonth Fork dam, was re quired to file a bond for 3,000,000 before its charter was issued, and as the association is composed ot weultby people there is much talk ot their being compelled to pay part ot the damage caused by the disaster. Daniel Collins ot East Alliance, Ohio, was evidently born to bad luck. Tiring of life, he cut n gash in his throat, stabbed himself twice in the stomach, twice over the heart and then bung himself to tne limb of a tree, but officious neighbors inter fered and he was cufdown alive.
