In order to pour tho coffee, she went to an adjoining room for a towel. A four-year-old girl lifted the coffee pot and dropped it into the cradle, where lay an infant girl aged 18 months. Tho result was that the child was literally bathed in the boil ing fluid, scalded from head to feet, and died in a few hours. A young lady desirous of a corsage bouquet for tho Terpsichorean ball last Friday night sent to the flourist for one of these embellishments to beauty. But the assistant in charge mistook the requirements of tho oc casion and surprised the lady by send ing her four magnificent calla lilies and an equal number of gigantic poppies. The latest ityle of Gents' Boots and saoes ai tr. j. uooiHiAS'i, THE RECENT COLLISION. Condition of the "Alliance" And Her Cargo. Yesterday forenoon, says yesterday's Oregonian, captain Bailey, of the steamer Alliance, Mr. F. Strong, president of the Portland and Coast Steamship company, Mr. F. S. Bos- worth, marine surveyor, and a num ber of interested insurance agents, went down on the Undine to visit the beached steamer. They found that she had settled slightly during the night, and that the hold was com pletely filled with water. The hole stove in the side of the Alliance is larger than was thought, being as one of the visitors to the craft said big enough to drive a horse and wagon through. The hole in theZtenuoe'sbow cbd- tain Bailey saya was made by one of the deck beams of the Alliance. The deck load or the Alliance wag not damaged, and was removed to tho unaine, which returned to this city about 3 v. M. and transferred it to iub uezj. juiies. n consisted ot a considerable quantity of coal oil in cases, boxes of vegetables, coops of chickens, a lot of coal in sacks and a lot of pig iron. Several merchants who had shippodgoods on the Alliance were around inquiring what was to be done with the cargo, and some talked of duplicating their orders, but in the absence of any certainty as to yiow much tho goods would be damaged, or any instructions form their custom ers, this was put oft Some classes of goods will of course, be utterly ruined, while others will only be injured as far as being salable is concerned. Tho loss will fall upon the merchants to whom the goods were shipped, as the responsibility of the merchant shipping is at nn end -when they re ceive a receipt for the goods delivered in good order. Tho steamer is not liable for damages caused by "tem pest, nre, acoident," etc. Tho goods will be taken out of the A llance and brought back here as soon as possible. The local inspectors sum moned the captains to appear and make their reports of the affair yes terday, but as tho inspectors have" ar ranged to go to The Dalles Sunday, the investigation will not be held till next Wednesday. The Danube was discharsinz her cargo of rice and Chinese merchandise yesterday, and outside of the small hole in her port bow showed scarcely a trace of the accident, although Cap tain Baily says her cutwater passed six feet into his boat. A Fortunate Druesist. Mr. Edwin W. Joy a prosperous druggist on the corner ol Stockton and Market streets, In San Francisco, probably never dreamed of rivaling 'in wealth the medi cine kings ol the country But various rumors having been floating around to the effect that ho has struck it big, an Examiner reporter was detailed to unearth the cause. It seems that about seven years ago an English physician, a great student o Bot any, located In this city. His practice was not extensive and yet the few cases that came to him attracted no little atten tion. His great success seemed to be in the treatment of liver and kidney disorders and vitiated .blood. He seemed almost infallible, and his well-kept secret was as much a mystery as himself, j After his de parture Mr. Joy determined to fathom the secret, and copying all tfio prescriptions ho had filled for the, erratic doctor, ho began a systematic analysis. He discov ered running all through the prescript ions for liver and kidney troubles, vitiated blood and stomach disorders a couple of vegetable extracts Indigenous to California so simple and so well known under home ly every day names to every school boy as to entirely dissipate the suspicion that they were tho active principles involved So certain, however, was Mr. Joy that bo had discovered the secret that he embod ied the new elements In a preparation of Sarsaparilla to dlsguiso tho taste, and put It before his customers under the modest name of Joy's Vegetable Sarsaparilla. Im mediately tho sarao stories cameback of its astonishing effects, and the mystery was solved, and tho talk it has cTcatedhas already caused it to step into prominence, and orders pour In daily from all over tho coast. And thus another California indus try leaps into existence. & F Examiner. Salmon in the Santiani.
