w IKlw fflatttj gjstotfaw. ASTORIA. OREGON: TUESDAY ATCtlL 2, 18S9. A fascinating but fatal form of amusement is leaning over from the platform of a rapidly moving train to watch, a tramp riding on a truck un derneath. Sterling Welch lost his life on the 0. & O., that way about two weeks ago, and last Saturday J. H. -Sinbouse met with a similar casualty near Salem: in both cases the tramp escaped, and rode securely amid in security. OTJE POKTLAND LETTER. Telegraphic Items Prom the Metropolis. When asked if he had any thing to say, the convicted murderer said: "On the night of the murder I was not out of my place. My ene mies have got up this job on me, I don't know why the jury rendered such a verdict against me. I am in nocent of the murder, and God knows how innocent I am. A. J. Sometime ago Herman Wise advertised that he woalu give two prizes to the nrst and second best original compositions to be handed in by boys under sixteen years of age, on the subject of "Why should people trade with Herman wise." The bovs were to select their own judges, expressing their preference on their compositions. A larco number were banded in: A. A, Cleveland, C. J.Cnrtis and J. F. Halloran were selected as judges, and yesterday afternoon awarded the first prize, a suit of clothes, to the following, written by No. 1C, Lester Busey: Why should people trade with Herman Wise? Well, when a feller coe3 and buys, He gets a suit thats just his size, And Herman never tells him lies; Or cheats him out of both hia eyes; But gives him back a rousing prize. That's why we trade with Herman Wise. Why should we bay of Herman W ise? He is the man to advertise; And never by the slow coach tries To catch the business as it flie3. It surely is a great surprise To see the nobby suits and ties That fill the shelves of Herman Wise. The second prize, a hat, was awarded to No. 15, Jcs. Layzell, tho author of the follewing: In answer to your advertisement of last Sunday morning Salmon Tips to answer why should people trade of Her man Wise. Fir3t because he is cheap. Second because his articles are good. Thirdly because he is one of tho most obliging, polite men in tho city. Fourth ly because he was the only one ever gave ns a Christmas box ever since we left the old country of all tho store gentlemen there is in the city. I am sure if moro Christmas presents were given away there would be moro trade during the year. I would recommend everybody to trade of Herman Wise. If his clothes don't suit take them back like I did and he will change them for you. I remain his well wisher. Carpenter's Union Organized.
