I Small's Illustrative Story. - Mr. Smalls, the colored South Carolinian who recently contested the election oi representative El liot, is a capital story teller. Some ot his illustrations are as orignal and indeed smack very much of the same flavor as those of Sam Jones, the Georgia preacher. One day, not lonp ago, Mr. Smalls was asked if he did not think the dem ocrats of the south were acting very friendly to the negroes. "There was once a fellow named Eph Johnson." Mr. Smalls replied, "who owned a flatboat that he used to run on the Savannah river. Eph was a dreadfully wicked innn, and the p:oii3 colored people all along the river had about given up their dibits to reform him. One Sunday the bow of Eph's boat stuck fast on a bar not far from a churcli where the colored people were holding a revival meeting. All efforts of Eph and his son to pole it off were futile. " 'Boy, said Eph, 'you go obah to de church an' tell de niggahs dat yo' dad has got 'iigion an' dat ho wants to had a prayer meetin' on de boat right away. Run along now, chile.' "In a few minutes the colored people came hurrying to the boat. " 'De prayer meetin',' s:l'd Eph, 'am gwine ter be right dar on de stem.' "The innocent people assembled at the stern of the boat and as they did so the boat floated free irom the bar and swung off into deep water. " 'Now, den, you d d fool nig rahs.' said Enh."'crit offn dis boat es fas' es you kin scrabble. Dey ain't irwine ter be no pra' meetin' iivar ef I kin Iic'd it.' " With consummate story-telling skill Mr. bmalls left his audience to make its own application, and walked away. Washington Post. Eticlilcn'b Arnica Salrc.
