The Committee Favor the Portage Road, The committee on memorials and resolutions ot the Columbia Water way association had a called meeting in the office of Hon. M. O. George, at Portland last Tuesday afternoon. The committee, which consists ot Hon. M. C. George, ot Portland, Hoi Ion Parker, of Walla Walla, B. S. Huntington, of The Dalles. W. P. Gray, of Pasco, and J. F. Holloran, of Astoria, considered sundry plans pro posed for the o ening of tho unner and middle Columbia to traffic. While no definite conclusion was positively reached, it was the unani mous opinion of tho committee that the state should raise- a tax sufficient to build and operate portage roads at tne cascades and from '1'ne Dalles to Gelilo, to be maintained by a ton nage tax, and therefore it was de cided that a suitable bill bo drafted and presented in the legislature au thorizing and ordaining the building 01 sucn portage road. In furtherance of this idea and to the ond that the bill may receive the affirmative action that its merits and importance entitle it to, the commit tee desire to place themselves in com munication with members of the lee- islature who are interested in the subject or who proposo to introduce any such bilL Any communication for the committee can be addressed to the chairman of the committee. Hon. M. C. George, Portland, and it will receive prompt consideration. FRESH FASIIION FANCIES. The half-long sleeves, now so much worn for evening, have ribbon epaulets, or else long strings of eastern-looking beads pendent from the lower edges. The plain coat sleeve is rarely seen nowadays. But it it suits one's taste it can be made sufficiently dressy by setting four bands of wide velvet di agonally across it. Black silk stockings embroidered up the outside of the leg to simulate buttons and buttonholes, so recall a Bishop's gaiters as to have a decided ecclesiastical tang. Now that the stocking is so much a feature ot the toilet, it is well to know that there are those to be had which have silk outsides and bal- briggan insides. They will stand any amount of wear. The newest bonnets have very flat crowns, though tho trimming gives the effect of height. They are very fully trimmed, with usually s bow under the brim, and strings either of very narrow velvet or of ribbon four or five inches wide. Diamonds and rubies set in a pat tern ot ivy leaves upon a background of black enamel make the cases ot some ot the handsomest new watches. A dog's head in black enamel, with collar of pearls, is the most unique of mourning scarfpins. Long scarfs of colored lace are even newer than the boa for wear about the throat. They harmonize much more completely with the Em pire gown, but lack the warmth and richness ot fur, and have a certain fly-away and frost-bitten effect. Figaro jackets are now made of braid and beads and lined with bright silk to match the accessories of the costume. Sometimes the fabric is in cashmere colors, with a good black lining, in which case the confection may accompany almost any toilet. How Men Die. If we know all the methods of ap proach adopted by nn enemy we are the better enabled to ward off the danger and pospone tho moment when surrender becomes inevitable. In many instances the inherent strength of the body suffices to enable it to op pose the tendency toward death. Many however have lost these forces to such an extent that there is little or no help. In other cases a little aid to tne weakened J-iungs will make nil tho difference between sudden death and many years of useful life. Upon the first symptoms of .1 Cough, Cold or any trouble of the Throat or Luugs, give that old and wellknown remedy Boschee's German Syrup, a careful trial. It will prove what thousands say of it to be, the "bene factor of nny home." The lumber sawing capacity of all mills in Washington territory, as completed from lumber shipments and local sales is 509,961,270 feat, val ued at Sb.7&9.0SU.25. The actual lum ber production being nearly 323,000, 000 feet, the remainder is divided up into laths, shingles, pickets, spurs and small lumber. This production cov ers the territory of Puget sound, Gray's harbor mills, Columbia river. Shoalwater bay, and a few internal mills. Their Business Booming. When she went off the stocks into the water, a by stander cried ont, "O, how sho scoons!" The builder instantly re plied, "a schoonor let Lor be;" and from that time vessels thus rigged have gone by that name. The word scoon is popularly used in somo parts of New England to denote the act of making stones skip along tho surface ot the water. The Scottish scon means the same thing. The word ap pears to have been originally written Bcooner. Epoch. The (ransition from long, lingering and painful sickness to robust health marks an epoch in the life of the indi vidual. Such ,a remarkable event Is treasured in the memory and the agency whereby the good health has been at tained Is gratefully blessed. Hence it is that so much is heard in praise of Elec tric Bitters. So many feel they owe their restoration to health to the use of the Great Alterative and Tonic. If you are troubled with any disease of the Kidneys, Liver or Stomach, of long or short landing you will surely find re lief by U'e of Electric Bitters. Sold at 50 c. and SI per bottle at J, W.
