News from London indicates the probability that an attempt may be made to introduce salmon into Aude river, -which flows into the Mediter ranean near Narbonne. O ne hundred thousand ova of "Sacramento salmon will be placed in the river. Levi P. Morton, in a formal con ference with Thomas C. Piatt and leaders of the Piatt faction at the Fifth Avenue hotel last Tuesday, in formed them that Harrison had de cided not to call the leader .pi any faction to his cabinet If New York cannot unite on some one the state will not be represented. The president last Wednesday sent to the senate the nomination of Thos. Burke, of Washington territoryto be chief justice of the supreme court of the territory, vice Chas. E. Boyle, de ceased. The news was received with great satisfaction in the territory as considerable effort has been made to secure his appointment. At the session of the millers' con vention of the west and northwest last Tuesday, resolntions were adopted calling for curtailment of the output of the mills of the country for Janu ary to one-half the average capacity, naming a committee of three to regu late the output, and on the advice of three-fourths of the mills of thexoun try asking the railroads to make the export rate 5 per cent, less than the internal rate and asking for that rate and forbiddinc consignment of flour bvthe mills for three months after January 1, 18S9. The house committee on'territories on Wednesday decided to call up tho bill of representative Baker, for the admission oil Dakota on January 15, uu der a resolution of the house, making the question a special order from day today. After the Baker bill is taken up it is proposed to substitute for it tho omnibus bill agreed upon by tho Democratic caucus, and bring the latter up every day until it is finally acted upon by the house. A dispatch from Zanzibar says that in pursuance of tho sultan's orders, four natives awaiting trial for mur der, were horribly executed in tho the streets of the town; their heads being cut off and their bodies left where they had fallen, exposed and nnguardedNnntil the evening of the day of execution. The sultan also ordered twenty-four prisoners, in cluding one woman, who lad been sentenced for life, to be put to death in a similar manner during the next week, a few to bo executed each day. The British consul vainly protested against these atrocities, as thr sultan proclaimed that in future lie will be guided by the Mohammedan lawonlv. Senator Stantobd created a great deal of surpriso in the Republican senate caucus last Wednesday, when he took occasion to notify tho caucus that he could not .vote for- the tariff bill in its present condition. The meager Republican majority in the senate makes it impossible to pass the the tariff bill in caso Stanford votes against it ;Explaining his action, he says: '"The bill is not satisfactory to mo because in my judgment, if it be came a law, it would injure several industries id California of great prom ise. In tho first place, the bill cuts down the present duty on sugar one- halt I consider there is no longer any doubt about the successful rrnnu- faoture of sugar in California from beets. It seems to me that in n few years the raising of sugar will bo one of the most important occupations in California. The bill also reduces the tariff on oranges, lemons and limes. This, however, can easily be reme died." r r The general verdict Is that Griffin & sea nave me inrpesi anu uesi ussuri,- Wt Holiday uoous ever snown in Ladies' S&00 Fine .Shoes.; land turned French iutis. Hand bury met in Portland to consider the project for tho improvement of Ta quina. bay. A report was drawn up ana forwarded to T. Lincoln Uasey, chief of the United States engineers, with headquarters at Washington, D. 0., by whom it was -approved and re turned. The report has jnst been made public. The following extracts from it will prove interesting: "Captain Willard Young presented a project, the principal feature of which is the building of a north mid tide jetty, extending from the north bead along and behind the reef forja distance of 2,300 feet, leaving an ".en trance width of about 1,000 feet. The project also proposes to raise the south jetty to full high water mark, which by his estimates will require 20,000 tons of stone. Tho width of the entrance proposed, that ol l.uUU feet, fulfills two essential conditions, namely,' it corresponds fairly to in terior wjdtns near t bo-mourn audit gives reasonable facility Jo vessels seeking entrance. It is "not, how ever, expected that the ship channel, between the jetties, will be wider than the interior channel, which is about 500 feet." Of tho several pro jects presented, the board decided that this is the most practicable, aud accordingly reported in favor of its adoption. The estimated cost of Ibis new jetty is 91,500. Preparatory work has already been started on thi3 now jetty. The board also presented mi esti mate of completing the south jetty, now in the course of constrnction, at Yaqnina bar, placing tho cost at 869.250. Nearly S250.000 has already been spent in improving Yaqnina bay. Bids were opened yesterday in Capt.
