When tho eyes become weak, and the lids inflamed and sore, it is an evidence that the system has become disordered by Scrofula, for which Ayer's Sarsaparilla is tho best known remedy. Scrofula, which produced a painful In flammation in my eyes, caused me much suffering for a number of years. By tho advice of a physician I commenced taking Ayer's Sarsaparilla. After using this medicine a short time I was completely Cured My eyes are now in a splendid condi tion, and I am as well and strong as ever. Mrs. 'William Gage, Concord, N. H. For a number of years I was troubled with a humor in my eyes, and was unable to obtain any relief until I commenced using Ayer's Sarsaparilla. This medi cine has effected a complete cure, and I believe it to be the best of blood puri fiers. C. E. Upton, Nashua, N. H. From childhood, and until with a few months, I have been afflicted with "Weak and Soro Eyes. I have used for theso complaints, with beneficial results, Ayer's Sarsaparilla, and consider it a great blood purifier. Mrs. C. Phillips, Glover, Vt. I suffered for a year with inflamma tion in my left eye. Three ulcers formed on tho ball, depriving me of sight, and causing great pain. After trying many other remedies, to no purpose, I was final ly induced to uso Ayer's Sarsaparilla. By Taking three bottles of this medicine I have been entirely cured. My sight has been re stored, and thero is no sign of inflamma tion, sore, or ulcer in my eye. Kendal T. Bowen, Sugar Tree Ridge, Ohio. My daughter, ten years old, was afflict ed with Scrofulous Sore Eyes. During the last two years sho never saw light of any kind. Physicians of the highest standing exerted their skill, but with no Sermanent success. On tho recommen ation of a friend I purchased a bottle of Ayer's Sarsaparilla, which my daughter commenced taking. Beforo she had used the third bottle her sight was restored. Her cure is complete. Grading on the Ilwaco & Shoal water Bay railroad is progressing rapidly. The 'right-of-way is cleared of timber to within a half mile of the bay and the graders are only a quarter of a mile be hind. There are about twenty-six Chinamen employed and eight wbitemen, besides the engineers, By the first of December work at this end will be completed, and operation's will then be suspended until February, when track-layiDg will commence and grading from Long Beach to Ocean Park re sumed. An amus'iDg circumstance oc curred to the writer while up on the Nasel recently, rather too good to keep. A visit was made to one of the logging camps, and one of the hands at work seeing the writer approach, took him for a detective in search of the festive criminal, and made a precipitous retreat into the ' recesses of the forest. He was induced to return on being reformed that it was a case of mistaken identity. The terminus for the railroad has been selected at last. It is about three miles of this place, and half a mile or three-quarters of a mile this side of J. P. Paul's place. The road is being graded out on a line with the fence which creates Paul's north line. Deep water at that place is reached at a distance of about 1,400 feet from the bank. Seldom, if ever, in the history of the oyster industry on Shoal water bay has it looked brighter than at present. A great many are now engaged at work at this place and Bay (Jenter. One at traction for the business over for mer times is that coin is paid for oysters tho same as the farmer would get paid for his wheat. The Astoria people aro going to build a railroad to Clatsop and have it in operation bv the first of July, 1889. They have $60,000 subscribed toward a capital of 6200,000, and woik will begin October 1st. But, gentlemen over there, you have got to agitate, and then talk about it and publish an article about it every day, and get out an extra during the day, and then hoop it up some more all the time. It takes a heap of this kind of work to build railroads in this country, we have discovered. Tho railroad company have served notice upon John Briscoe that suit will at once be com-. menced against him on the bond for 10,000, on the ground that his part of the agreement wherein he agreed to appoint a disinterested and unprejudiced person as arbi trator, has been violated. They have also begun suit before Judge Allyn for a right of way, which will be heard at chambers, and the judge will be called upon to ap point three disinterested persons to look over the land and award damages. ' The naturalization clerks at Philadelphia had a curious appli cant before them the other day in the person of a man born ami raised in this country and who had been for years an American citi zen. He had gone to Canada where he had remained a number of years and had there been elected a church warden. The law of Great Britain requires such an of ficer to be a subject of the queen, and accordingly he was natural ized there. He afterward returned to Philadelphia and desiring to re sume American citizenship be was obliged to take out papers the same as a foreign born subject. At the present time, there is, as far as known, only one five-masted schooner afloat in the world, and that is tho schooner Louie,, which arrived in port yesterday from Ta coma and now lies at anchonin the harbor. As she passed up the bay and came to anchor off the Mission flats she was the cynosnre of all eyes on the city front, and old seafaring men opened their eyes with astonishment as they be held the novelly rigged vessel gracefully sailing up to her anchor age. Soon after the Iiouis drop ped her anchor she was boarded by the CalVs marine reporter, who obtained from her master, captain A" J. Hatch, the following details in regard to the only five-masted schooner afloat on the coast, or elsewhere. The Louis was built at Coos bay, Orcgbn, by A. M. Simpson, under the supervision of John Kruse. Her managers are the Simpson Lumber company of this city. Her dimensions are: Length, 210 feet over all; beam, 38.feet, and depth of hold, 18 feet. , She is 819 tons register and her carrying capacity is 250,000 feet of lumber. She left Tacoma twelve days ago under command of captain Hatch, with a cargo of 1,500 tons of coal and 1GO,000 feet of lumber, having on board a crew .of ..ten all, told. The captain says she sailed well on the way down and was easily handled, but light winds and weather were encountered and she did not have an opportunity of showing what she could do. Tho five masts of this novelty in marine architecture are named as follows, commencing from the bew: Foremast, mizzen mast, mainmast, spanker mast, jigger mast. The mizzenmast, the middle one of the five, is 113 feet in height, the main and spanker masts are 110 feet high, and the fore and jigger masts each 106 feet high. She also carries a bowsprit 1-1 feet long. She carries no topmasts, all the lower masts having square heads. She is a fine looking vessel, and a credit to the Pacific coast, which can claim the honor of building and owning the first five-masted schooner afloat. Tho Louis is strongly built of Oregon pine. The interior fittings are'.not yet completed, but will be finished down here. It is intend ed to make a steamer of her, proba bly not while she is here on this trip, but in the near future she will receive her engines and ma chinery here. S. F. Call. Peak's is the purest and best boap ever made. In some of the counties of Da kota they pay five cents a tail for prairie dogs, and in one place they pass as currency. A man goes in to a saloon and for his drinks throws on the counter gopher tails. When the drawer is full they are taken to the county office and re deemed or paid out. It looks a little novel in church to see prai rie dogs tails going into the con tribution box, but so it is. POWDER Absolutely Pure. Passengers on the ferry from Vancouver were treated to a novel and rather excitinp- specta cle yesterday morning. Just as i.uc,uua.i, yraa approacuing tue jic aron shore a salmon was seen pur SjUedJiy & seal- The fish swam near;"!be''surface and although evi dently putting forth its best en deavors, the seal kept close be hind it. The fish in its terror ire quently leaped from tho water, but all its doublings and turnings were in vain. The seal followed in its track like a blood hound. Tho passengers became quite excited watching the race and every one wished to seo tho sal mon escape its nursuer. At length tho boat drew near, but the seal was too intent on its prey, wmen was almost witnm its grasp, to pay any attention to the boat or the passengers, but just as it was about to seize the salmon, tho latter made a leap and landed on the apron ot the boat. A cruel, hard-hearted mem ber of the boat's crew cap tured the exhausted, fish, and instead of restoring it to the water when at a safe dis tance from the seal, sold it to a farmer. Tt h well known that seals and sea lions prey on saimon, but it is seldom that sach a scene as that above described is wit nessed. Oregonian, 29. 0WDE? 5S?
