She saw a sight that made her bury her face in her hands, and reel, sick and faint to a chair. The table had been drawn close to the woman bound to the bed. On it was the body of her little child,, and, horror of horrors, the father had been dissecting it before its mother's eyes. Its head was sev ered from its body; its eyes gouged out and hung down upon its waxen cheeks. The brain had been taken from' the skull. The clothing had been torn from its body, and with the skill and nicety of a physician's hand, the father had removed the entrails, hert and lungs, and laid them in a heap at one side. "This was the scene that the gts lighted upon the anniversary day of their wedding. Through all the hours of the night the mother had gazed on that sight. "With fasci nated eyes she had watched the maniac father at his hellish work. With hideous interest her eyes had been glued on the spectacle while she was powerless and dumb. Probably she had seen him re cover his senses, and, realizing what he had done, take his own life and spare hers Then, with not a soul to comfort her, she stood there hour after hour with her dead. Do you wonder that the horror of it is branded on her face? "From that day to this she has not spoken to anyone. "Whether she hears, or thinks, or understands cannot be said. She submits pas sively to her attendant, following where she is led and eating what is forced through her lips. There is one time when she speaks, how ever. It is in the evening before her wedding anniversary. That has come around twice since she has been here. The first time her attendant called me, and we stood outside her door. I never heard anything like it, and hope I never will again. The lips that had been closed on that awful night were opened. The pleadings, the en treaties, the anguish, the wild de spair of her utterance would have moved a heart of stone. Sudden ly there was a wild scream of con centrated awe and horror, and all was still. "We rushed in, expect ing to find her features relaxed, and, perhaps, her pillow tear stained. But no; there she lay, quiet and still, with set and rigid horror in her face. "isucn is the Instorv ol our strangest patient." As tho reporter and superin tendent left the office a female at tendant passed with the unfortu nate woman. She walked with the slow, hesitating step of the blind, her gaze fixed on something in front of her. And her face wore that awful expression it will wear until death moulders it away. She was soon out of sight, but the memory of tirat pallid mask of horror will remain indelibly stamped on our mind until the end of time. ilucUIcii's Arnica Salve.
