A Young Mother Porced to See Her Baby Dissected. "That is a most remarkable pa tient," said one of tho attaches of Longview insane asylum to a re porter for. the Cincinnati En quirer. Lunatics of all ages and of va rious dc;res of madness were grouped about. He was pointing toward the window, where a woman ',was seated, leaning for ward in the attitude of one who is observing something intently. She was clad in a simple black gown. The graceful lines of her form and the shape of her slender hands, which were clasped loosely in her lap, showed plainly her youth. Yet her hair was white as snow. Her face was one never to bo for gotten. It was not fresh and white, as one would expect in a young woman, but a dead and liieless ashen gray that contrasted strangely with her snow-whito hair. But this was not what made it remarkable. The range of expression of the human features is almost unlimit ed. But the expression of this face seemed to transcend the power of even human features. In every line, in every swollen vein and muscle, in the great star ing, distended eyes, whose pupils were expanded until only a nerve line of gray iris could be distin guished, in the dilated nostrils, in the compressed and pallid lips that seemed to be ever suppress ing a cry of anguish that ever rose to them, horror, absolute and un utterable horror was written. Agony, terror, misery too pro found for fears, were there also, but high above them all could be read this frightful horror that seemed to only faintly express itself. At first one would think it was a mask that some marvelous geni us had carved. But then the humanness of the expression was too apparent. The soul that was thus giving vent to itself was too near at hand. Terrible indeed was the picture presented by that quiet, patient, almost girlish form, and then, as it were, frozen." In bis private ollice he told the story of how the young woman become thus transformed into a living and breathing statute of horror. "I think when I have finished," said he, you will agree with me that hers is the saddest, and at tho same time the most frightful story you ever heard. "She was brought here about two years ago by her older brother, who related all the par ticulars to me. I told him then that her case was probably incura ble. She was left with us with the instructions that no expense should be spared in making her comfortable, lhat was two vears ago. bhe was nineteen then. When not quite eighteen sho was married to a young physician of her native town, who, by skill and attention, had gained an extensive practice. In every way they seemed happily mated. She was beautilul, of a happy disposition, and had been engaged to him since early childhood. "He had sufficient wealth to make the match desirable from a worldly point of view. Yet her relatives had always looked on the engagement with disfavor. They warned her that there was insanity in the family, and that he himself was subject to fits of melancholy, but she laughed at their warnings and married the man she loved. Nothing could have been happier than the first year of their married life. He was no longer melan choly, and seemed to be more de voted with each passing day. In June the young wife became a mother and there was new joy in the little family. The young phy sician loved his child passionately, for its own sake and because she was its mother. "As the first anniversary ot the wedding come round they deter mined to celebrate it with especial rejoicing, as it marked an era in their happiness. Tho evening be foreit was the evening of the 26th of August the young physi cian for the first time since his marriage seemed melancholy and depressed. The summer had been hot and the demands upon his ser vices many. His wife asked him some questions and he censured her impatiently, almost harshly. The tears came to her eyes. He instantly repented, and all was sunshine again. Presently she said: "I am going to mother's a few minutes to tell her to come "over early to-morrow morning. Take care of baby while I'm gone. You need not come after me, as I shall be home long before dark." She spent an hour with her moth er, then started home through the dark. The walk was short and the neighbors soon saw her pass in at her own door with a light, happy step. Exactly what hap pened in the physician's house that night will never bo known. The next morning early the moth er, according to promise, came over. Knocking at the door and finding it unlatched she walked in. "Annie! Annie!" she called. Her daughter did not reply, and the mother went up the stairs thinking to find her in her bedroom. She opened the door. Tho room was brilliantly lighted with gas, and the blinds were closed. The horrified woman almost fell over the body of her son-in-law, sprawled upon the floor in a great pool of blood, with his handsome face set white and ghastly. A fearful gash across his throat and a dissecting knife in his right hand told the story of sui cide. The mother screamed and looked wildly round, expecting to see the dead body of her daughter also. Tied to the bedpost, with her hands behind her back and a gag across her mouth, was Annie, while her face was just as you saw it to-day. The wide, staring eyes were gazing at something.
