Discussing wages ic oneo his lectures before the students of Harvard university, Professor Thompson gives many facts of cu rious interest. In 1793 the Schuyl kill and Susquehanna Canal com pany advertised for workmen, of fering $5 a month for the winter months, and $4 for summer with board and lodging. Next year there was a debate in the house of representatives which brought out the fact that soldiers got but $3 a month. A Vermont member dis cussing the proposal to raise it to $4, said that in his state men were hired for 18 a year, or 4 a month with board and clothing. Mr. "Wadsworth, of Pennsylvania, said: "In the states north of Penusyl vania the wages of the common laborer are not upon the whole su perior to those of the common sol dier." In 1797 a Rhode Island farmer hired a good farm hand at $3 a month, and $5 a month was paid to those who got employment for the eight busy months of the farmer's year. A strong boy could be hired at that time in Connecticut for SI a month through these months, and he earned it by working from day break until eight or nine o'clock at night. He could buy a coarse cotton shirt with tho earnings of three such months. The farmer could pay no better, for the price they cot for produce was wretch ed. Butter sold at 8 cents a pound, and when it rose suddenly to 10 cents several farmers' wives and daughters went out of their minds with excitement. Women picked the wool off the bushes and briers where the sheep had left it, and spun and knit it into mittens to earn 1 a year by this toilsome business. Ihey hired out as help for 25 cents a month and their board. 13y a day's hard work at the spinning wheel a woman and a girl together could earn 12 cents. As late as 1821 the best farm hands could be had for 25 cents a day, or twice as much in mowing time. Matthew Carey, in his let ters on the charities of Philadel phia (1827), gives a painful picture of the working class at that time. Every avenue to employment was choked with applicants. Men lpft the cities to find work on the ca nals at from GO to 75 cents a d.iy and to encounter the malaria, which laid them low in numbers. The highest wages paid to women was 25 cents a day, and even the women who made clothes for the arsenal was paid by the govern ment at no higher rates. "When he ladies of the city begged for an improvement of this rate the secretary hesitated lest it should disarrange the relations of capital and labor throughout the city. Poor people died of cold and want every winter in the city, and the facts seem to have made an im pression only on benevolently dis posed persons like Mr. Care-. Ladies will find relief from headache, eostiveness, swimming in the iead, colic, sour stomach, restlessness, indi gestion, constant or periodical head aches, weakness in the back or kidneys, pain in the shoulders and different parts o tho body, a feelinR of Jassitude and despondency by taking Simmons Liver Regulator. It is not mi pleasant, is pure ly vegetable, and is not injurious to the most delicate constitution. The Pope to Move. PiTTSBURfi, Pa., Sept. 1. Rev. Father Shuck, pastor of St. Mary's church at Millhausenn, I ml., who was in the city to-day, has just re turned from Rome where he had audience with the pope. He says in an interview: "I have positive information that the pope willlnot remain in Rome more than two years more, and I expect he will have to leave here in the next few months. He will go to Spain where he is invited, and is sure of a cordial reception. The headquarters of the Catholic church will then be located at Madrid. Even now preparations are being made for his departure, that is liable to take place at any moment" For bilious fever and malarial disorders, use Ayer's Ague Cure. Its success is guaranteed il taken according to directions. Ignatius Donnelly, who went to London to get his book on the Bacon-Shakespeare cipher theory copyrighted, claims to have con verted John Bright and other fa mous Englishmen lo his theory. Back Prom the War at Last. Miles Kennedy, who left here for the war as a confederate soldier June 11th, 1861, returned to Americus this morning, bringing with him a wife and eight chil dren. Two were left in Virginia, where he married the girl who nursed him in 186G, and where he has lived ever since. He came through from Orange court house, Virginia, with his family in an ox cart. He was met by a brass band and a procession formed and marched from the edge of the city to the old court house square, where a tent had been erected. Col. Cutts made a speech of welcome and presented a roll of money from the people of Americus". A Dair of twins, six years old, but as yet nameless, were named Jackson anu i,ee by Mrs. .T. R. Hull. Kennedy Droba- bly is the last confederate soldier to return from the war, having hflfin irnne twentv-seven vears. Atlanta Constitution, August 15. Mr. Gladstone says that he can hold out no hope that he will be able to take nart in anv political work after tho settlement of the Irish question. His one aim in life is to secure home rule for Ire land. That done, he bcliecs his public work will be ended. The "Wendish nationality in Prussia and Saxony is reported to be rapidlv declining in strength, and before long the last remnants of a Slavic race, so powerful a thousand years ago, will have be come Germanized. In the three months ended June 30, 1887, the Nickel plate road showed surplus earnings amount ing to S12C,000. The figure this year was 1,124. This lookb as if the nickel were beginning to wear off.
