Sugar-Coated Cathartic If tho Liver be comes torpid, if tho bowels are constipated, or if tho stomach fails to perform its functions properly, uso Ayer's Pills. They are invaluable. For some years I was a victim to Liver Complaint, in consequence of which I suffered from General Debility and Indi gestion. A few boxes of Ayer's Pills restored mo to perfect health. W. T. Brightney, Henderson, V. Va, For .years I have relied moro upon Ayer's Pills than anything else, to Regulate my bowels. These Pill3 are mild in ac tion, and do their work thoroughly. I have used them, with good effect, in cases of Rheumatism and Dvspepsia. G. F. Miller, Attleborough, Mass. Ayer's Pills cured me of Stomach and Liver troubles, from which I had suffered for years. I consider them the best pills made, and would not bo without them. Morri3 Gates, Downsville, N. Y. I was attacked with Bilious Fever, which was followed by Jaundice, and was so dangerously ill that my friends despaired of my recovery. I commenced taking Ayer's Pills, and soon regained my customary strength and vigor. John C. Pattison, Lowell, Nebraska. Last spring I suffered greatly from a troublesome numor on my side. In spite, of every effort to cure this eruption, it in creased until the flesh became entirely raw. I was troubled, at the same time, with Indigestion, and distressing pains in The Bowels. By tho advice of a friend I began taking Ayer's Pills. In a short time I was free from pain, my food digested properly, tho sores on my body commenced healing, and, in less than one month, I was cured. Samuel D. White, Atlanta, Ga. I have long used Ayer's Pills, in my family, and believe them to bo tho best pills made. S. C. Darden, Darden, Miss. My wife and little girl were taken with Dysentery a few days ago, and I at once began giving them small doses of Ayer's Pills, thinkingl wonld call a doctor if tho disease became any worse. In a short time the bloody discharges stopped, all pain went away, and health was restored. Theodore Esling, Richmond, Va. ft Ayer's Pills, Prepared by Dr. J. C. Ayer & Co., Lowell, Maas. One of the most curious phe nomena of world building is now omg on close to the United tates without attracting general attention. The-fable of Atlantis is being repeated in real earnest. A large island is being swallowed up by the sea, and notone person in a hundred knows anything about it. The great sand island known as Sable Island, in north latitude 44 deg. and nearly GO deg. west longitude, on which so many brave ships have laid their bones, and which has been the grave-yard of so many bold sailors, will soon be a thing of the past. Sable Island was known to the French about 1600, but the first published maps made of it were drawn about 1775. These repre sented it as an island forty miles long and two and a half miles wide. Thirty-three .years later at tention was drawn to the island by the wreck of a troop-ship on its in hospitable shore, and it was care fully surveyed by the British gov ernment. It was then found to be only thirty miles long and less than two miles wide. Forty-two years later still Hon. Joseph Howe of Nova IScotia-isited the island qn behalf of the government and re ported that in the thirty years pre ceding his visit eleven miles of the west end of the island had been washed away by the sea. These changes were, of course, noted by the inhabitants and duly reported to their government. In 1802 a light-house was set up on the west end-of the island, five miles from the beach. In 1814 the superin tendent reported that the sea had eaten away four of the five miles, one strip forty feet wide and three miles long having gone in a single night, and that ho must move cast ward. He moved three miles to the east, but in six years more the sea again encroached on him, and he removed four miles further still. Since 1881 the ravages of the sea have been exceedingly de structive. One afternoon in Feb ruary, 18S2, the margin of the cliff on which the west light-house was situated suddenly gave way and an area forty-eight feet wide and :i quarter of a mile long was engulfed in the waves. The light house keeper and attendants barr-K escaped with their lives, having m their barn and much preper: v. The light-house was removed 1400 feet inland, but every storm this interval was diminished, the sea knawing off great slices thirty and forty feet wide and sweeping them away into the surges. In 1883 the east end began to be attacked, and in 1886 the superintendent reported that two of the three miles intervening between him and the beach had been eaten away in three years. Meanwhile- the work of erosion continued on the west side." Last February the light house keeper reported that the sea washed up to within fifty feet of his light-house- Before the end of the month forty-two more feet were swept away, leaving a mar gin of only eight feet. The light house was then removed further inland. It seems a mere question of time when the whole island will go, and nothing wilUremain but the memory of the shipwrecks it has witnessed. It will be an in stance of the disappearance of an island that was cultivated and in habited without the intervention of volcanic agency. "We on this coast have no such raging seas to tear away slices from the- flank of the continent. Tho work of the Pacific Ocean in this meridian has been that of a builder, not a de stroyer. But. in tho east, not only on Sable Island, but on the coast of Long Island and New Jersey, the sea is fighting to regain terri tory it once possessed and lost, audits march is resistless'. Call At His Post Day and Night, The vigilant Imp, lndlgestlon.goads us with his many-lashed scourge. Each lash Is a diabolic symptom. No comfort In eating, misery afterwards, little or broken rest at night, visitations of the nightmare during fitful Intervals of sleep, an uprising unre freshed and without appetite, and yawning during the day, nervousness and irritability of temper, even monomania In extreme cases. Hard to bear, all this. Kecessarj? No ! a thousand times no, so long as Hostet ter's Stomach Bitters, the nation's specific for indigestion., acute or chronic. Is procura ble. The commencement of a course of this medicine Is the commencement of a cure. Prompt relief first, absolute eradication subsequently. The truth of this statement, backed up by irrefragable testimony. Is well known to the -American people. So are others, viz : that the Bitters averts and cures fever and ague snabillous remittent, and re moves nervousuess. bUUousness, constipa tion, and kidney and bladder troubles. Went Pishing in a Hood. Mr, Thomas had a large farm 6n the Missouri bottoms, near Sioux City. It was all fenced with barb wire, there being two miles of such fencing on the place. He happened in Sioux city just about the time the gorge up the river had dammed the water to such a prodigious height. Foreseeing that when the gorge broke it would be likely to raise the water to such an extent as- to flood his farm, he rode hastily homo and made preparations accordingly. His stock and all that was mova ble was transferred to higher ground. Then he and his hired man proceeded to impale chunks of meat on every barb of that wire fence. It was a big job, but was finished just as the river began to cover the lower pasture lot. For twenty-six hours the water stood five feet above the top of the high est fence post, and when it receded tho most remarkable sight was re vealed. From every barb except three, of that two miles of fencing hung a fish. There were pickerel, bass, pike, suckers, and every other imanigable variety. A sim ple calculation will show precisely the size of the haul. It was alive wire fence, each wire having thirty six barbs to the rod, making, as any school boy can tell you, a total of 115,200 barbs to the two miles of fencing. There were thrcobarhs that had caught nothing, so that there were only 115,197 fish. Per haps the most remarkable part of the story is to ceme: From that day to this, in all 'parts of the Missouri river there have be'jn caught just three fish, the exact number that didn't get caught on our friend's barbed-wire fence. loica Falls lierister.
