P) to gmtjj gtffotfmt. ASTOBIA. OEEGON: SATURDAY.. JUNE 23. lfiSS. WHO WILL IT BE? McEnley of Ohio As a Dark Horse. To-Day Will Doubtless Decide The Matter. (special to tiik astobian.) Chicago, Jnne 22. Tho Chicago convention baa now reached that stage in which all interest in its pro ceedings culminates. The decks have been cleared (or action and the battle royal is abont to begin. What the first ballot will disclose is already known; the all absorbing cariosity is to know what the fourth or fifth ballots will show. The air of the convention hall is fall of rumors, theories and blind guesses. Sherman loomed up last night be cause of a great demonstration which the presence of the Ohio senator provoked. There was a feeling that Sherman would win to-day or not at all. Rumors are afloat of "danger of defection in Pennsylvania from Sher man to Harrison, but there are so many stories of all sorts that nobody seems sure of the ground he stands on and everybody is prepared for the unexpected. MCKIXLET OF OHIO. Chicago, Juno 22. Attention is called to the fact that major McKin ley of Ohio in having secured eight votes on the third ballot stands in precisely tho same position as that occupied by Garfield in 1880; as an earnest follower of Blaine and the man best qualified after Blaine to make a strong protective cam paign he is occupying much more attention than the size of his vote warrants, and should Cali fornia now string for him it would be very significant as showing the direc tion in which Blaine's friends are tending, and it is believed it might result in his nomination. CHICAGO TRESS OriNION. Chicago, June 22. The Tribune says there is a scheme on foot among Blaine's friends to nominate him after giving Harrison a chance as a feint to beat Sherman. It says that New York may turn to Gresham if Depew is not taken up by other states. The News says Michigan, Ohio and Indiana are having formed a comur nation to prevent a stampedo for Blaine. The Inter-Ocean says New York is receding from Sherman and Gresham and Harrison stock is advancing. The Times says the contest is nar rowing down to Blaine, Sherman and Harrison. RIVEIt AND BAIi CHARGES. Poetland, Or., June. 21, 1888. To the Editor of The Oreaenian: Seeing the announcement in this morning's edition that tho Oregon Railway & Navigation company has fixed a schedule of rates for towage on river and bar which is pronoun ced to be "eminently satisfactory to tho resident managers of tho largest shipping houses," I -would neverthe less like to ask if this is in conso nance with the pledge of tho railroad owners made to the visiting commit tee in New York, who reported to'tho board of trade that tho promise was readily given that rates would be es tablished which would put shipments ex the Columbia river on a par with those from Paget sound. If the schedule proposed is deemed one to meet that exigency it will doubtless be approved lay the "resi dent managers" much more heartily than it will by resident property own ers of this city. It is in fact, and effect, a tax on shipments ex the Columbia river of at least SI per -ton over and above similar shipments from Paget sound, and handicaps Portland to that extent in the rivalry that is to ensue for the grain shipments of eastern Oregon and Washington territory. Sohooled by.affliction, any one con trolling the O, E. & N Co.'s line will eventually understand it to be a car dinal proposition that grain freights to the ocean must at least be as cheap as tnat oy any other line to obtain business. So far as the schedule of towage is concerned, it is much higher than the rates in vogue when the Portland tug company and Capt. Flavel fixed terms several years ago, and I feel confident if a monopoly of the busi ness such as the O. R. & N. Co. are laboring to create wonld ho nffarpri Mr. Kamm he would 'gladly obligate nimseit to do bar and river towage at a quarter reduction from the list of theO.B.&N.Co. interested in .rortianci's weirnrn na I am, I do not feel at ease to read the sugar-coated apology for the list even if coupled with sanction from the resident managers of the principal shipping houses, who mostly have put little concern for our commercial interests, as it makes no difference to them whether shipments are made from here or Paget sound, O. (SFECIAL TO THE ASTOBIAS,) roBTLAND, June 22. The firemen's tournament has attracted great at tention and drawn an immense crowd. The first race to-day was a wet test, distance 700 feet, in all; 500 feet to hydrant, lay 200 feet of hose uncouple ana screw on pipe. Time taken when water leaves hose. Tho first team run was the East Portland team; at 11 o'clock they were in readiness and a few moments later made the run; Time 42 1-C sec onds. Tho Portland team followed about half an hour later and as they camo down the racks wero greeted with shouts. When their time an nounced everybody concluded they were victorious; time 37 ll-12seconds. The Albany team, however, soon dispelled the illusion nnd came down the track at a rattling pace. When within about twenty feet of the goal one of the men fell and was severely bruised. This interfered materially with their time but they succeeded in lowering tho time previously an nonncad, making the distance in 37 y, seconds. "Our Boys" hose team of Walla Walla were thu nest runners, and the way they came tearing down the street evoked much enthusiasm. They came like arrows and never made a slip, getting water in 3G 14-15 seconds and winning the race. Tho Iieabanon team after a long and tedious delay, got started about 150 p. M. They wero slow in getting water and then the time was an nounced at 4.0 seconds. The Vancouver team made splen did time in running, bnt failed to get the nozzle on the base before the .water came. No time allowed them, tut tho distance was covered and water obtained in 35 seconds. AS USUAL. Tho 100-yard foot raco was nest run, but the contestants got a bad start and there was much dissatisfac tion. The judges finally declared tho raco off. It will bo run over to mor row. "" THE CHAMPIONSHIP. The championship lest race this afternoon was won by the East Port land team; time, one minute, 1C;2-15 seconds. HANGED TOR MURDER (special to tiie astocian) Louisville, June 22.
