A Washington dispatch says the house of representatives has the river and harbor bill under consideration. -uore man naif the items in the meas ure have been read and adopted in the committee of whole house. There nas been some scattering opposition to it, but there is a solid ffotprminprl majority for the measure. Men who are in favor of it are ready to give it consideration in preference to all other measures, except the tariff bill. A coffee and cake resort for all night men talks of getting a "bouncer." A New York establishment of that nature has abolished its bouncer. The crude and primitive way he had of yanking loungers from Jheir seats and dragging them out by the collar, upset the serenity of his customers. Now, when the obfuscated lounger tarries too long over his coffee, a waiter comes along, takes off the lounger's hat, wakes him, politely hands him the tile, remarking, "There's your hat." The lounger sleepily murmurs "Thank you., puts on his hat and drops off again. Then another waiter tackles the lounger just as the first one did, but with much more obsequious po liteness. After his hat has been handed to him six or eight times the lounger begins to feel as if he would like to lick a few waiters. But he knows he can't, so he simply swears a little and quickly goes out. This method of getting rid of what the coffee and cake men call "lodgers" is not only effective, but contributes to the pleasure of observant customers. ITEMS FROM ILWACO. This is only a month s record. Death stalks grim and unopposed through the once flourishing island. Handcuffed and outraged by her cruel masters, Cuba is fast sinking into a condition of ut ter lawlessness, despair and ruin." CHINESE LEGISLATION. Washington, April 23. It is prob able that the committee on foreign affairs of both houses will take up the Chinese question in a very short time. The senate committee, in all probability, will offer amendments to the treaty which was negotiated by secretary Bayard, and request the president to secure the consent of the Chinese minister to accept the amendments. In the house commit tee the Belmont bill, which has been drafted to carry out the new treaty, will probably be set aside for a bill Which Mr. Morrow is preparing, and which is intended to accompany the new treaty as amended, if the senate takes that action. If the Chinese minister is sincere in his statement that the Chinese government desire to exclude Chinamen from this conn try, he cannot refuse to accept the amendments which will be proposed by the senate. They are intended to give effect to his professions. It "Dawned" Upon His Mind. A few days ago an Oregonian called at the White house to see the presi dent, and the subject of the recent Democratic convention came up in the conversation.. And then the bloomin' blasted rain it drove the sparrow out. And then the bloody hloomin' sun it drove away the rain. And the blasted bloomin' sparrows-flew up the spout again." An Explanation. What is this "nervous trouble" with which so many seem 'now to be at flicted? If you will remember a few years ago the word Malaria was com paratively unknown, to'-day it is as common as any word in the English language, yet this word covers only the meaning of another word used by our forefathers in times past So it is with nervous diseases, as thev and Malaria are intended to cover what our grandfathers called Billiousness, and all are cansed by troubles that arise from a diseased condition ot the Liver which in performing its func tions finding it cannot dispose of the b.le through the ordinary channel is compelled .to pass it off through the system, causiug nervous tronbies, Malaria, .billions .fcever. etc. ion who ar6 suffering can well appreciate a cure.- We recommend Ureen's Au gust Flower. Its cures are mar velous. ., 4 Going to le a Millionaire. It was less than six years- ago that A. M.
