A GBEAT INVENTION.
Writing Bj 'Telegraph Ten Thousand
Miles Away.
One of the Wonders ot the Nineteenth
Century Supplanting the Telephone
By the Telautograph in
Long Distance Writing-
Chicago Herald,
Prof. Elisha Gray, of Highland
Park, has just completed an in
vention scarcely less wonderful
and valuable than the telephone,
of which ho was also the inventor,
but of which he was defrauded.
"Within a few days," said the pro
fessor yesterday, "I shall give a
private test of my new telauto
graph, an invention which will
largely supplant the telephone. I
have already tested it to my satis
faction, over and over again, and
on Saturday I shall give an exhi
bition to some gentlemen from the
east. I have just taken it to
pieces to make some slight altera
tions or I would show it.to you
now.
"By this invention you can sit
down at your office at Chicago,
take a pencil in your band, write
a message to me, and as your pen
cil moves, a pencil here in my la
boratory moves simultaneously
and forms the same letters and
words in the same way. "What
you write in Chicago is instantly
reproduced here in fac simile.
You may write in any language;
write in shorthand if you like, use
a code or cipher, no matter, a fac
simile is produced here. If you
wish to draw a picture, it is the
same the picture is reproduced
here. The artist of your paper
can, by this device, telegraph his
pictures of & railway wreck, or
other occurrence, just as the re
porter telegraphs his description
in words. The two pencils move
synchronously, and there is no rea
son why a circuit of five hundred
miles cannot bo worked as easily
as one of ten miles.
"This telautograph will supplant
the telephone for many purposes.
It can be worked in exchanges,
just the telephone is, or by private
wire. It has many advantages,
too. It is noiseless and devoid of
many annoyances so common to
the telephone. It will be much
less affected by induction. There
will be no trouble in catching word
or syllables, letters or figures. No
misunderstandings will result. Be
sides, it leaves a record at both
ends of the wire and there can
be no dispute about what was
said. For all commercial trans
actions this would bo an invalu
able feature. In ordering goods,
or sales of stocks or grain, or in
transmitting names or addresses,
its superiority over the telephone
is obvious. For desultory conver
sations, it is true, it would not be
ao rapid of working, for the reason
tnat one cannot write as fast as he
can talk, but, on the other hand, it
would save many delays and an
noyances incident to telephonic
communication.
"When one person wishes to
communicate with another by the
telautograph ho ptlshes a button,
which rings an nunciator in the ex
change, or in the office of the per
son with whom he wishes to con
verse. Then the first party takes
his writing pencil from his holder
and this may bo pen or pencil
and writes his message upon a
roll of paper. As he writes, so
writes the pencil at the other end
of the wire. Finishing his mes
sage, ho adds a cross, or any other
simple token that he has finished,
when the second party takes down
his pencil and writes his reply.
Thus a conversation can be carried
on easily and quickly, and when
it is finished another simple work
say tho telegraphic signal "30"
will indicate the end. Both
parties have a full record of the
conversation and each possesses
the other's autograph.
"In writing, your pen or pencil
is attached to two small wires reg
ulate the currents which control
the pencil at the other end of the
wire. But these wires give yon
no trouble. You hardly know
they are there, and can write with
as muoh facility as if they were
absent."
"Can this invention be used to
advantage commercially?"
"Yes. It will not cost more
than $15 or $20, and is easily kept
in order. I have tried it again
and again, and it works more per
fectly than the telephone, and it
is much less liable to have its use
fulness interfered with by induction.
A Iiittle World of Striped Men.
A visit at the state asylum for
transgressors of the law reveals sev
eral interesting facts, culinary, so
cial and penal. The 254 inmates of
the penitentiary are served with
225 'pounds of fresh meat every
day, viz., at the midday meal.
They have pork-and-beans, Bos
ton style, -with graham bread for
breakfast, and consume four bu
shels of potatoes a day. Pickels
are raised in the institution garden,
of which eight barrels are on hand.
Certain of the convicts makes the
soap, which is cut into bars about
a foot long, of the usual family
calibre. The convicts that do not
work in tho stove shops receive
about an inch of this soap, a' week,
but the shopmen two inches.
The state used to furnish tobacco
to the inmates. This unseemly
republican extravagance haying
been discontinued, the shopwork
ors from their four bits a day not
only buy their own tobacco, but
also buy it for those inmates 'that
do not receive wages, as none out
side of tho shops do. That's char
ity, sure enough. Continually
gangs of hardened criminals watch
the strong iron and steel doors, in
order to make a rush for liberty
as some keeper or a visitor with a
guard passes in or out. 1 he turn
keys are naturally very watchful
Within a couple hundred feet of
the wall around the building, on
which the armed sentinels walk
back and forth, is the "dead line."
Any person garbed in stripes that
crosses this line from within be
comes the target lor the bullets of
the sentinels' rifles. Oregon Pity
Courier.
ChilN and Fever. Malaria
"Jlany cases of fever and ague, dumb
ague and congestive chills were prompt
ly arrested and entirely banished by tho
use of Simmon's Liver Regulator. Ypu
don't ay half enough in regard to tho
efficacy of this valuable medicine in
cases of ague, intermittent fevers, etc.
Ever v case lias been arrested immediate
Iv. f was a sufferer for years with tho
liver disease, and only found relief by
using the regulator." Rohkkt J.
Weeks, Batavia, Kane Co., 111.
Milk asdrawn from the cow aver
ages 05 deg. Fahr.; of this 87 per
cent, is water anil 13 per cent, sug
ar, butter, fat, etc.; tho latter cools
slower than water and shrinks un
til tne temperature reaches 38 deg.,
when it commences to expand.
Now if we place the warm milk
in a tin vessel, and put it in cold
water, which is a better conductor
than the watery part of the milk
cools first, shrinks and becomes
heavier in proportion io its bulk.
The creamy portion holds the
heat, retains its bulk, and, being
lighter than 'the watery portion
floats. The pan should not be
over 8 inches in diameter, and
the water should be 49 deg. and
not allowed to get warmer tnan 50
deg.
Chronic constipation, with all its
attendant evils, is cured by taking
Ayer's Cathartic Pills. Sold by all
dealers in medicine.
Insufficient ventillation is con
sidered by Brown-Sequard to be
the principal cause of consumption.

Hovel Test of a Oook.
A well known' Paris scientist,
Dr. Delaunayhas made some cu
rious discoveries which show the
connection " between little and
great things. To ascertain the
qualities of an applicant to cook he
says it is sufficient o give her a
plate to clean, a sauce to make,
and watoh how she moves her hand
in either aot. If she moves it
from left to right, o in the direc
tion of the hands rtf a watch, you
may trust her; if the other way,
she is certain to be stupid and in
capable. The intelligence of peo
ple may also be gauged, the dqp-
tor further says, by asking them to
make a circle on paper with a pen
cil and noting in which direction
tho hand is moved. The good stu
dents in a mathematical class draw
circles from left to right. The in
feriority of the softer sex, as well
as the male dunces, is shown by
drawing from right to left.
