tzj hc gattij gforiim. ASTORIA. OREGON: TUESDAY -FEBRUARY 21, 18S3 TnEr.n arc forty-five real estate agents in Spokane Falls, and the Chronicle says they are all making Henry George lias been read out ot tbe anti-poverty party. That is to say, ho is out of it; for, as Mr. George is now worth nearly ona hundred thous and dollars, it is reasonable to co chide that be read himself out Journalistic evolution is working curious results when the New York papers have editorials daily on the condition of a sick money. The Alta thinks that senator Blair may now have an obituarv when he dies. SniciiTAKEOUSLY with the little boom for Sheridan for the presidency, in tbe Oregonian, comes a threat in the Welcome of a scandal connected with the general of the army. It never fails: put a man tip for office and he is a target for abuse. Malice loves a shining mark. If Sheridan is the smart man they say he is, he'll stay just where he is now. Evidences of tbe former sweep of the sea where now is dry land are con stantly turning tip. The earthquake in South Carolina left deep pits on the margin of which white sand appeared, such as is only found near the sea shore. On this sand has sprang up a dense growth of sea-weeds, and it is conjectured that the seeds whence sprung this growth had been buried at a great depth for many centuries. a sax fkancisco on.siox. The salmon market is practically at a standstill. The throe largest oper ators, Wm. T. Coleman fe Co., the J, K. Armsby Co. aud "W. H. Rogers have, so far as wo are able to learn, done nothing, and there seems to be no indication of desire to purchase at present prices. Tho fact is all buyers are holding off. The strength ot the situation up to this timo has con sisted in the high price demanded for raw fish on the Columbia river. This has been tho backbone of tbe market. Only six canneries are reported to have given out knitting, and thus yielded to the fisherman's terms; the remainder having signed an agree ment not to do so, and are still hold ing out Several canners have visited this city in tho last ten days to ar rango for advances from their agents, and some have been refused. At no previous year havo preparations been bo backward, and with many canner ies, preparations for tho season are absolutely nil. With leading opera tors refusing to purchase, tho position of the canners who refuse to accept tho fishermen's terms is rendered strong, though tho moral support thus given. Leading operators de clare that SLG9L75 per dozen for Columbia river salmon is out of the question. Tbe staying ca pacity ot the canners and fishermen is therefore likely to bo tested, aud it will bo interesting to watch the result as the season advances. Another clement of strength in the situation has been the fact that last year showed a small Columbia river pack. Many experienced can ners on the river claim that fish are as abundant in the river.noiv as ever, but that high and muddy water caused the shortage last year. War ren, who packs at Cascade, claims his pack was as large as in 1833; that he had no moio appliances for catch ing, and that the run was as large as the previous year. Speculations on the run or catch for 18S3 have no sig nificance, but buyers arc content to await developments, claiming that a 81.60 present market, with a ftir if not large Columbia river pack, and very large preparations for operating in Alaska, renders the fulu-o very uncertain. So far twenty-one caanors havo announced the intention of packing thisseason in Alaska, and a good output may reasonably lie looked for. The market to-day is not strong, if indeed there is any market. It has been felt that competition between lending operators would induce high prices this season as formerly. It is not improbable that the present sea son will demonstrate that it is one thing for dealers to fight for control when prices are low, but it is another thing when prices are higli and un certain. Tho opinion is freely ex pressed that there will havo to be a lowering of values before mncb busi ness can be done. Grocer aitd Conn- try Merchant, 17. Don't Experiment. Will Be Surrendered The steamship Idaho is again here taking a cargo of coal. A gentleman who is quite well posted in the affairs of the Pacific Coast Steamship com pany, in conversation with some friends yesterday said: "The compa ny will probably not send tbe Idaho north again, but will put the Elder on that route in her place. The Ida ho, a member of the company told me was becoming too soft for severe ser vice, and it would cost about 830,000 to put hor in first clas3 shape again, but in view of tho fact that she is con demned by the government for smng gling, they do not intend to lay out it dollar on her that they can help. At tbe time of her seizure in connection with that 810,000 opium case she was appraised and released on bonds. If it comes to a question of surrender ing tbe steamer or of paying tho bonds, the company will undoubtedly let the steamer go aud take a chance at buying her back at a much lower figuro."
