Since yesterday morning the ther mometer has risen with great ra pidity from 25 degrees below to 30 above zero, at which point it stood at noon to-day. In the sun the snow has been melting rapidly all day. To-night it is colder, standing at zero. The opinion prevails among cattle men that livestock interests in the territory, will be found to have suffered very little during the recent cold weath er. When the first storm came, the grass was thick and plenty on all the ranges, after a propitious sum mer last year and the cattle were rolling in fat from the long con tinued and '.xcellent grazing since last spring. Cattle in such condi tion as Montana herds were when the winter opened are in shape to withstand a month of the coldest kind of weather without do ing ' much feeding, and would emerg from a storm only to die, when they get at the rich grasses that first aDDear. which their re duced systems are not able to as similate. The past storm will have the, effect of pulling down stock somewhat, but with a contin uance of mild weather they will be able to recuperate and get into good shape to be prepared for February storms. Unless more and severer storms come uponus late in the season, stockmen say, the losses in the ter ritory this winter will not be more than the average. As yet no re ports have reached us of any stock losses whatever, and such advices as are at hand indicate that cattle, horses and sheep are doing well in all grazing districts. Preparing to Tight. Berlin'. Jan. 18. A committee of the reichstag disposed of the Landwehr clauses in the military bill and adopted the amendment relating to the period of service for second men, the effect of which will be to enable men entering the active army before the twentieth year to leave the Landwehr earlier. General Von Schellendorf, minis ter of war, stated that the measure would give the army in time of war an additional force of nearly 700,000 trained men. The cost is estimated at 80,000,000 to 100, 000,000 marks. The committee approved the bill without further mendmenta. The Russian government has re newed anti-German measures in the Baltic provinces.
