No Teredo at Astoria. The following brief dispatch from San Francisco illustrates graphically the great expense entailed by the ter edo, a small marine worm that at San Francisco and on Fuget sound honeycombs the piles. Sak Fbancisco, Sept. 23. Tho Oregon dock, under pressure of immense weight, suddenly sank yesterday and caused con siderable consternation. It was found that the dreaded teredo had been at work and destroyed many of the piles. The damage has been repaired. There is no danger of this kind at Astoria. Logs may lie in the water in perfect safety. Piles driven here thirty years ago, when replaced this fall were found sound at the core. The teredo is unknown here, and its absence ia "worth millions of dollars to Astoria as a lumber center. Lecture on Matrimony. A translation is given here of a commu nication to La Tribuna National, of Buenos Ayres, which contains an alarming account of the workings and intentions of anarchists in the United States. The writer is supposed to be a member of one of the South Ameri can legations in Washington, and the article is, therefore, not as reliable as it is sensational. It is declared that "secret preparations are toeing made by the international fraternity of so cialists and anarchists, who are mak ing ready for a revolution in the United States in 18S9, the anniversary of the French revolution. The Bed International league is a soulless as sociation of anarchists who are now in force in Chicago biding their time, having selected the date of the anni versary of the French revolution for their uprising, supposing that on that day many manufacturers will close their shops, and a general panic will reign. "The Beds are estimated at about 100,000 strongj.and they expect that by the year of the panic they will have increased to 400,000. They pro pose to make Chicago the headquar ters of the revolution in 1889, where there will be a combination of the di verse branches of the International league, and a complete programme, is drawn up on the government which will be substituted for the one under which the people live now as soon as the revolution triumphs." Of THE It was learned with surprise yester day that the officers at Fort Canby had received official telegrams the purport of which was to stop all work, close active operations and hold the men in readiness to leave the fort The idea appears to be to abandon the post and withdraw the garrison. Some time ago General H. C. Du nne, chief of engineers, was out here on an official inspection tour. It is understood that from him came the recommendatien: it is said to have been approved by the general of tho army and the secretary of war. Whether the matter has gone so far as to be beyond the domain of re monstrance is not clear. General Howard, commanding the division of the Pacifio, was telegraphed to re garding the matter last evening, and an answer -will probably be received to-day: to senator Dolph in Washing ton, senator Mitchell and congress man Hermann dispatches were also sent If the policy of Gen. Sheridan be to concentrate troops in large garri sons it need form no part of that pol icy to construe an artillery post like Canby as being within the promise of such governmental action, The mouth of the Columbia is of sufficient strategic importance to re quire the maintenance of at least one garrison, and for obvious reasons it appears to be the opposite of wise policy on the part of tho powers that be to remove all the troops from both the north and south banks of the mouth of the greatest river of the west Astoria is not interested in this matter so much as the entire northwest What with curtailment of mail facilities, refusal of needed river and harbor appropriations and proposed removal of troops from im portant stations, it seems as though this section of the Union is being treated like a neglected step-child. Protest, prompt, vigorous and ear nest should be made against this proposed removal, and proper repre sentation may have the effect of re scinding this unwelcome order. THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. At a called meeting of the chamber of commerce last evening to take ac tion on tho proposed transfer of the two companies of the 1st artillery now at Fort Canby, the president and secretary were, on motion, instructed to immediately telegraph to the mili tary authorities at Washington a protest against such proposed trans fer, with cogent reasons therefor, and also to telegraph to our senators and representative the disapproval with which tho matter was viewed by the people of this section. It was, also, on motion, decided to telegraph the Portland board of trade, askiug their co-operation in tho matter. The question of establishing au ex press company to operate between here and points in Pacific and Che halis counties was ably and exhaus tively discussed without arriving at any definite conclusion. The matter of surveying townships not yet open to settlement or pur chase and which remain closed by reason of the meager government ap propriation for that purpose not be ing sufficient, also came up fordis oussion. On motion a committee consisting of Messrs. Gordon, Kin ney and Boelling was appointed to report further to the chamber, and the meeting adjourned. No Goins Adrift at Astoria. The following from the Seattle, V. T., Post-Intelligencer of October 6th illustrates a difficulty from which As toria, by reason of its situation, is happily free: A telegram from the Stilagnamish, Sat urday afternoon, announced that the wa ter in that stream was rising rapidly from melting snow in the mountains, and that the mammoth boom had broken and 10,000,000 feet of logs been set adrift, 2,000,000 feet of which went out to sea and will probably be lost Owners of small tugs were notified of this state of affairs and a number of steamers, have gone down to the mouth of the river to assist in picking up the valuable timber, which is rapidly being swept out to sea. The geographical situation of As toria renders such untoward acci dents impossible.- The river at Asto ria is nearly seven miles -wide, and however great the volume of water flowing seaward, no danger is appre hended either from loss of logs or breaking of booms by reason of sud den overflow. Recosnition From tho Gallery. Just as Mme. Qualitz had worked the audience at Niblo'a a few even ings since into a paroxysm of delight with her terpsichorean domiquavers, upshoots and incurves the silence was oroKen oy a voice irom tne "rop shell" shouting to a companien: "Hey, Clams, deres me Anntv Kate!" "Where?" came back from Clams. "On der stage. She's der fourt' one in der second row." "What! Der woman wit' der red frizzes?" "Yeh!" "Hully smoke, she's a corker!" The conversation was brief, but to the point, and "der fourt' one in der second row" of the ballet was accorded considerable attention during the re mainder of the performance. Dra matic Weirs'.
