The Tacoma Ledger says tbaton the
4th of March, 1889, -will be completed
the century since the inauguration of
the first president of the United
States Not exactlry the dawn of
the 30th of April, 18S9, will round the
century of presidential executive au
thority to completion.
Whex a woman will she will, and
that is all there is about it The pro
verbial eagerness of women to learn a
secret is exemplified in the Bay City,
Mich., woman who disguised herself
as a man and clerked in a store for a
year, and thus obtained admission to
the Knights of Pythias.
Advocates of prohibition say that
an amendment is needed to the state
constitution. "What is more needed is
an amendment to the man's own con
stitution. A man cannot be reformed
by act of congress, and human nature
is one of the things upon which even
an Oregon legislature cannot legislate.
In a sandpit near Omaha two enor
mous teeth have been dug up. The
naturalist who tells the story of their
discovery says that they must haye
belonged to some "animal that was at
least "six times as large as the mod
ern elephant," and that ate timber as
a steady diet Maybe the existence
ofsnch an animal accounts for the
vast prairies of the west, and that he
starved to death when the supply of
timber gave out
The Minneapolis Tribune, in view
of the supposition that " every reader
of a daily newspaper is often conscious
that he knows much better how to run
a paper so as to give general satisfac
tion than the editor himself," has in
vited its readers to contribute articles
giving their views as to how a news
paper should be conducted. Probably
a fair proportion of the persons for
whom the invitation is especially in
tended will reply to the effect that
that's no way to find outhow to run a
In answer to inquiry, The Astorian
htates that it will give as much space
to those desiring to give their views
on prohibition as the paper itself edi
torially devotes to adverse argument
regarding the advisability of that
movement Those whom the spirit
moves can have in this way opportu
nity to know just how long or how
short their communications maybe,
and any one who has anything to say
will be welcome, barring contemptu
ous and contemptible personalities
and insinuations, which have no prop
er place in argument, negative or af
firmative, on questions of public pol
icy. Any one who has anything to
say Worth saying can condense it, and
thus make it more effective.
The impression deems to be partial
ly received that Stanford, Crocker, et
al., or what is the same thing, the
Southern Pacific Uailroad com
pany contemplate the building of the
railroad to Astoria. This impression
is founded on misbelief. It is not the
present intention of that company to
build the road. The scheme in con
templation and in furtherance of which
the present 150,000 subsidy is being
raised, is projected by the San Fran
cisco agent of the Atchison, Topeka &
Santa Fe railroad. This ambitious
and enterprising corporation is in ev
ery way the business rival and antag
onist of the Southern Pacific railroad.
It is with the A., T. & S. F. people that
the negotiations regarding the pres
ent proposed railroad have been made,
and under the circumstances the sup
position that the S. P. E. E. has any
aiding interest in it is diametrically
opposite to the true state of affairs.
Gloucester Schooners Coining This Way.
Mr. "William Stow, presidentof the

Boston, Oct. 5th, '87.
I observe by the Boston papers that
four of the best Gloucester fishing
vessels, schooners Herrick, Webster,
Mollie Adbuy and W. D. Jordon, are
going to the northern Pacific coast,

and high: $10 to $25 per barrel. The
Northern and Canadian Pacific must
open up a large inland market for
fish. Captain Jacobs, of Gloucester,
has made a visit to the Pacific and the
despatch reported of these vessels to
