Cz Wet Sails Srtwiatt. ASTOBIA. OREGON: THURSDAY -OCTOBER 13.1887 Dubing the three months ending September 30th, 1887, there -were re ceived at San Francisco 185,211 cen tals Oregon and "Washington wheat The socialistic conference at St Gall, Switzerland, closed last Thurs day. The general result of the delib erations is believed to be the consol idation of -the socialist party through out Europe. The conference decided to convoke an international congress during 1888. ' In the year 1887 nine of the thir teen original states have Democratic governors, from Davis, in Rhode Isl and, to Gordon, in Georgia, Some of the governors in 1787 were Democrats as soon as party lines were formed, as, for instance, George Clinton, of New York, Benjamin Franklin, of Pennsyl vania, and Edmund Eandolph, of Vir ginia. In De Witt J. Seligman's paper, the JSpocIi, ex-Mayor "William R. Grace has an article on "Presidential and Vice Presidential Nominees," in which he says: "Mr. Cleveland's nomination I regard as a certainty; not only will no one have the temerity to oppose him, but the Democratic party has no one to offer in his stead at this time. Mr. Blaine's nomina tion is, of course, not so certain. Nevertheless, I think it very prob able." The case of the state of Kansas vs. Zeibold & Hugelin, brewers and dis tillers, was argued in the United States supreme court last Tuesday. The case arises under section 13 of the prohibitory law of Kansas, which provides for shutting up all places which manufacture, sell, barter or give away intoxicating liquors in violation of said law, and for the punishment of the owners. The question presented by the case is whether, where a citizen purchases and improves property for business, a subsequent act of a legis lature can prohibit or regulate the use of that property for the purpose for which it is designed, without compen sation. The decision of the United States oircuit conrt was m favor of tho brewers. The Latest From the Front. Trains are now Tunning to Siskiyou, leaving just thirteen miles of staging to Ashland. The balance oi the track will bo for a large part over long high trestles, and will take some time to complete, but it iB generally understood, says the Tele gram, that through trains will be put on some timo between November 15th and December 1st. The management of the road have made preparations for making the last stage trip a notablo one. Dan Crowley, the old-time stage driver, will manage the eight horses to be hooked to the old Concord ooach, and Rube Bey , nolds, a tried "Wells Fargo express mes senger, will haye a seat on the boot, with his little sawed-off shotgun across his knees. Mr. Crowley is a short, thick-set man, wearing an iron-crav beard which ' he keeps closely trimmed, giving his al- r ready stern features a somewhat severe ' look. He drove the first stage that went , over the Siskiyou mountains, and in all his varied experience of thirty years' stage driving he has had the almost unique good fortune to havo never been "held up." Mr. Crowley has acquired a modest fortune of about $40,000 and has retired fioiu the business, living on a fine farm in the beautiful Shasto valley. Mr. Reynolds cannot say the same for him self, aB far as tho "hold ups" are con cerned, for he has been through a number of hair breadth escapes, but has always been lucky enough to come out best man. At one time while napping his stage was neid up, and tne treasure made away with by two road agents. After driving on after the affair Eubo got off the stage and told the driver to go on about a mile and wait for him. He then started back on the trail single handed, caught up with the men as they were in the act of dividing their plunder, and, after killing one of them, he took tho other .and the treasure back to tho stage. Mr. Reynolds is also a small man, but fnll of pluck and courage, as the above story indicates. . A House Divided Against Itself. Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Gray, of Davenport, "W. T.j are registered at the Gilman. Mr. Gray is tho editor of a red-hot republican paper at Davenport, while Mrs. Gray is ardently on the other side of the political family. During tho late political cam paign in the territory, Mr. Gray was called away from homo, and the editorial responsibility was placed in tho hands of of his bright and sparkling wife. No sooner was ho out of sight than she emulated the example of the immortal John Phcenix by turning the editorial columns in favor of all that smacked of ancient democracy. Mr. Gray was in Tacoma when he received the first conv .of his paper after leaving home. It is said that ho fainted away upon reading wo mot iuui parugrupuB ui ui& cuironai celumns: but after recovering he hurriedlv packed his "grip," hastened back to Da venport, and didn't allow Mrs. Gray to "run the machine" again during the rest oi tne campaign. Pendleton, Oct. 11. The seventh annual session of the grand lodge of Oregon, Knights of Pythias, con vened here at 7 f. m. to-day. This morning the Willamette delegation arrived and were escorted to their stopping places by members here and a band. The city is elegantly and heavily decorated with banners, flags, bunting and tri-colored cloth. Business houses and residences seemed to vie with each other in this. K. Alexander was at tho head of all the work, and acted a3 president of the day. A parade in the afternoon was made up of uniformed Knights. At the opera house Rev. Potwine opened the exercises with prayer. John C. Leasure delivered an address of welcome, and A. A. Cleveland, ol Astoria", an oration. A choir and a band famished the music. The hall was completely filled. The ball in the evening is another success. Tho Knights of Pendleton and eastern Oregon generally are doing all they can to exceed previous attempts in this state to entertain tho grand lodge. There is a very full represen tation here. The election of officers will probably occur Thursday. It is hoped to conclude the work rulay.
