Tho latest advices from northern ports I verify statements heretofore made to tiie ettcct that tne saimon catch this vcar will be light. Dis patches received to-day from the Columbia river, state that a ean vas of all the canneries shows a total pack of 324,460 cases, this being 100,000 less than put up last year, 200,000 less than in 1S85 and 300,000 less than in 1884. The pack on the Sacramento river is too light to note. Advices from Fraser river, British Columbia, continue discouraging. The Alert bav fisheries have been a failure. One canner who contracted to de liver 10,000 cases of salmon has only been able to put up 3,000. On the pack of Alaska much now de pends. Eastern Alaska has re ported a fair pack to date. "West ern Alaska is too remote to hear from yet. The Alaska pack will probablv amount to 100,000 cases, the largest amount ever produced by that territory. All dealers are oversold on Columbia river salmon and none is to be bad to fill orders. Quotation for Oregon brands is $1.55; Alaska, $1.40 to arrive. A Peasible Scheme. Seattle, "W. T., Aug. 5. News conies from Port Townsend, W. T., to-day to the effect that a great scheme is now under way by San Francisco, Sacramento and "Wash ington territory capitalists to build a railroad from Port Town send, on Puget Sound, to the moutli of the Columbia river, and probably to Portland, Orecon. A company is to be incorporated with a capital of $3,000,000. Terminal property on Port Town send bay has already been favora bly looked upon. It is supposed that Central Pacific people are backing the scheme. The country to be passed through is ricli in til lable land, timber and mines. It is estimated that there are 3,000,000 working women in Eng l?nd; about one-half of whom are in domestic employment. Fur ther, that half the working class families of the land are maintained by the work of women's hands at extremely low wages.
