J OLY 14,1887
Chicago's city directory for
1887-88, just issued, indicates a
total population of over eight hun
dred thousand.
It is not yet too late to save' the
salmon from extinction. Preser
vation and propagation, concurrent
legislation on the part of Oregon
and Washington are among the
requirements.
Now is the time for the irrev
erend Mr. McGlynn to put on the
market his tooth powder, or liver
pills, or whatever it is he is going
to sell. He is the best advertised
man in the United States, and all
it has cost him is an excommuni
cation. .
The Manzanita sailed yester
day on a six weeks' cruise to Alas
kan ports. This light house dis
trict i9 too big and ought to be
subdivided. There is close on to
two months of the best weather
'every year cut out by this Alas
kan trip and ports in this vicinity
have to suffer for it.
Owe day a young clerk who was
ambitious for a large fortune deter
mined to visit commodore Van
derbilt and learn from him the
secret of accumulating wealth.
He entered the magnificent apart
ments of the millionaire, with
whom he was somewhat acquainted,
and asked on what mysterious
principle he conducted business
with such unexampled success?
Mr. Vanderbilt eyed him a mo
ment to sound his motives and
then slowly replied: "By work
ing hard and saying nothing about
it."
Foet Worth, Texas, is an am
bitious town. One of its orators
on a recent holiday occasion said:
"You come from every portion of
this great state from the pineries
of the -east to the cactus fields of
the west; from where the gorgeous
sunshine tints the draperies of
the mountain fastnesses of the
great northwest to where the
maiden's morning blush is first
kissed by the breezes from the
salted seas. And I will here re
peat what I have said on a former
occasion as illustrative of the
hopes, ambitions and expectations
of this city. We expect in the
netr future to rival New York in
the ubiquity of. our commerce;
Paris" in the arts and sciences;
Lowell in the number and variety
of our manufacturing enterprises;
Athens in our institutions of learn
ing; Rome in splendor and
pageantry, and London in wealth
and lordly palaces."
Where Pigs Host Ban Fast.
The Washington Critic tells of a
northern stock raiser who took a lot
of fine Berkshire pigs down to a
South Carolina state agricultural
fair. Much, to his chagrin and sur
prise they 'attracted little notice,
while neighboring pens of native hogs
were constantly surrounded by ad
miring fanners. Determined to learn
the reason he accosted a Carelinian:
"Can you tell me, my friend, why
these fine-boned, short-legged, heavy
meated pigs get no attention, while
those lean, lank, long-legged, unprof
itable razor-backs get it all?"
The Carolinian shifted his quid,
shut. one eye, sighted along his nose
and drowned a fly a rod away.
"StraDger, h'it ain't no use for we uub
to raise no hogs that cyarnt run f ast
er'n a darkey."

Ths Southern F&oifio ought not Ions to
postpone the building of the proposed
branch from Forest Grore to Astoria.

think it would be a creat deal better to

TWO YAMHILL COUNTY OPINIONS.
It is reiterated from San Francisco
that the Southern Pacifio is seriously
contemplatmcp a road to Astoria from
Forest GroTe. Those best posted ou the
railroad situation say the Southern
oould scarcely afford to ignore the ad
vantages offered by the route to Astoria.
j. nose advantages are great in the one
matter of hauling wheat from the vreat
xp. Willamette Talley to the deep sea
port, roraoout the same cost as nam
ing the myriad tons from these crreat
wheat fields to Portland the Southern
Pacifio can haul them to Astoria thereby
saving the extra coBt of towage and
lighterage from Portland to Astoria. In
fact the farmers can afford to pay half of
the cost of towage and lighterage, or
two-thirds of it as added freight on the
Forest Grove and ABtoria rood. Still
Portland would do all the business of the
wheat market because it is the great
money center, and the practical head of
navigation. It would of course operate
somewhat to the detriment of the barges,
and such like craft on the Willamette
and Columbia or at least beget a compe
tition that would reduce rates. And
herein ia created a suspicion that the
' roject is only-mooted as a menace to
lanacer Potter acainst interference with
the Utah and Montana trade of the
Southern. Such is perhaps also the
origin of the rumor that the Southern
would put on a line of steamships to the
mouth of the Columbia, That the South
ern will ran a line on to Pucet Sound
and even on to Now Westminister is not
at all improbable because thev want a
complete system. Nor is the fact, that
tne Astoria road may be used as a menace
to the allied lines, to be permitted to ob
scure tne tact that tne Astoria line is one
of great importance and of early prob
able construction. If it were not of
great importance it could not be a men
anoe. Meanwhile Manager Potter is not
asleep. His plan to shorten the time be
tween Portland and Omaha by 24 hours,
indicates a powerful and resolute purpose
to make Portland the creat center of the
Pacifio coast system, and the entrepot of
the world's commerce. He will doubt
less recognize the importance of the
Astoria line and perhaps take measures
to secure railroad connection to that im
portant city. If he should seize upon the
line and build, he would probably keep
all others out. it is only lw miles zrom
Portland, while it is said to be 110 to
Forest Grore from Astoria. Whether a
more direct route from Portland than
via Forest Grove could be found, we do
not know. But at any rate the situation
is interesting all around and not without
big possibilities for Portland and Astoria
too. x amiiui neporter a.
