JUNE 15, 1S87
WEDNESDAY
-, ,t a
Of the two hundred tnousauu
working women in New York, the
highest average earning is $7 a
week. Numbers earn but $5 a
week. .Thousands are unable,
with sixteen hours1 work every
day, to reach the. lower amount.
Grave charges m against a state
senator were recently investigated
by a committee qfthe'Connecticut-j
legislature, who returned tue ioi
lowing repert: "While we believe
every charge to be true, we don't
want the fact . published to the
world, and we therefore exonerate
him." '
k General Anson S. McCooK,as
. "'secretary of the United States sen
ate, has a very pleasant berth.
His salary is four thousand dollars
a year; he is allowed five hundred
dollaVs a year for a horse and wag
on, and five hundred or one thou
sand dollars as disbursing officer.
He is not obliged to be in "Washington-more
than half the year. ""'
Colonel Feed Grant, the eld
est son of the late General, is said
ftcrbe. developing into a man very
"much' like his father, and, in proof
of this, it is told that he is never
seen without a cigar in his mouth.
He is a dull-looking j'oung man.
His eyes have no brightness, his
features no characteristics,, his
complexion no color, and ho seems
to be simply fat and dull.
Julio Caerillo, who once
owned the land on which the
whole city of Santa Rosa, Cal., is
bliilt, who' gave the plaza on
which the court house now stands,
ancT who gave the ground upon
which every church in that city
now stands, still lives there, his
""only resources being the money he
receives for performing odd chores
for his neighbors.
General George A. Sheridan
says he got more money for less
actual service than any other man
wjio-ever-served in congress. He
' was not admitted to his seat until
about three thours before-the expi-
7ation"oT his term, and he drew
salary, mileage, etc., amounting to
..about fourteen thousand dollars.
-"In'tnat respect he thinks his con
gressional fame will be immortal.
Among curious suggestions
made for the celebration of the
Queen's Jubilee is the proposal
that precisely at noon on June
21st, private individuals should
pljjy on pianos and other instru
ment, "God Save the Queen," and
thatsall the bands of the kingdom
should publicly produce the na
tional anthem. It would probably
be the greatest chorus ever known
of that particular song.
The editor of the Tyler, Texas,
Tribune, thus welcomes a boom
which he sees appreaching: "Flap
thy wings and sail on, proud bird
XiS -prosperity. No city in Texas
h& received thee with a more wel
come halloo of delight than Tyler.
Tiyler will feed thee on angel food,
lyatl her. bed shall be thyT bed, and
thy bed shall be her bed, and the
gpp-tiewave of appreciation shall
furnish Jtljee an everlasting home."
' The $494,600 which Mrs. Grant
has received from the sale of her
husband Vsvork, represents 70 per
cept. of the gross profits, on the
publication, which have thus
amounted to about 8706,600. The
gross receipts from the sale of the
work have amounted to not .far
from 3,000,000. There have been
sold 312,000 sets, at an average of
probably $9 a sot, which foots up
$2,808,00.0 as a fair estimate of
what Jihe public ha3 paid for this
work'. The skins of 7000 goats
anjcHOjOOO sheep have been used
for the covers of these volumes.
"There is nothing intrinsically
impossible in these statements,"
said Capt. ,Clarence E. Dutton,
TJ. S. A.," chief of the bureau of
volcanic geology, to an associated
press representative,' who called
his attention to the despatches an.
nounclng a volcanic erupf";on jn
Sonora
"On the contr
arv. it is a
matter
of surprise ASb we have
not had some volcarxoes jn ourown
territory within te historic period;
or, rather, that we have not had
more, for it. -13 now known that
Mount St. Helens, in Washington
Territory wag jn a 8tate of activ
ity and sent out large quantities
of Vava and ashes as late as 1843.
I can specify from memory i re-
mar&aDle evidence or recent oc
currence in several localities where
violent eruptions have taken place.
One is near Fillmore, in Utah; an
other at the base of Mount Trum
bull, on the border of Grand
Canon; the third near Fort Stan
ton, New Mexico, close to the
Texas line, and another at Grant
station, on the Atlantic and Pacific
railroad, 60 or 70 miles from New
Albuqaerque. There are many
others in southern Arizona. I
have myself seen lava in which was
imbedded a fraemenf of Indian
pottery, showing that the outflow
was subsequent to the occupation
of the country by the Indians; and
two years ago I visited an extinct
volcano in northern California
which was so recent that some of
the trees killed by the heat had not
entirely rotted away. We have
been gathering' data of the Sonora
earthquake of May 3d, which gave
birth to this new volcano, and we
have received from all the affected
parts of the country about two
hundred reports on the subject
enough, we hope, to establish the
comparative magnitude of the oc
currence and give us knowledge of
the indications and violence of the
quakes. Its center seems to have
been about sixty or sixty-five miles
south of "our Arizona line in Old
Mexico. Its limits comprehended
about two-thirds each of the terri
tories of New Mexico and Arizona.
It was not comparable in violence
or extent to the Charleston earth
quake." Au End to Bone Scraping:.
Edward Shepherd, of Harrisburj?, 111.,
says: "llavinR received so mucn Dene-
lit from Electric Hitters, i reel it my
duty to let suffering humanity know It.
Have had a running sore on my leg for
eight years; my doctors told me I would
have to have the bone scraped or leg
amputated. I used, instead, three bot
tles of Electric Bitters and seven boxes
Bucklen's Arnica Salve, and my leg is
now sound and well."
Electric Bitters are sold at fifty cents
a bottle, and Bucklen's Arnica Salve at
-25c per box by W. E. Dement & Co.

In Consequence of a Boom.
"Has this town ever had a boom?"
inquired a Boston man of a native
who was loafing around a rail
road depot in Nebraska.
"I should remark!" was the ready
reply.
"Help things much?"
"Well, that's a question. We
boomed in two groceries, a mile of
sidewalk, three eastern widows, a
drug-store and five saloons in one
year, and real estate went up 30 per
cent"
"Then it must have helped."
"Yes: but we all got so infernally
stuck up that me and another feller
are the only two men in town what
speaks to each other, and seventeen
persons backslid from one church
alone."
Is Consumption Incurable?
Kead the follewing: Mr. C. H. Morris,
Newark, Ark., says: "Was down with
Abscess of Lungs, and friends and phy
sicians pronounced me an Incurable
Consumptive. Began taking Dr. King's
New Discovery for Consumption, am
now on my third bottle, and able to
oversee the work on my farm. It is the
hnest medicine ever made."
Jesse MIddlewart, Decatur, Ohio,
says: "Had it not been for Dr. King's
New Discovery for Consumptlen I
would have died of Lung Troubles. Was
given up by doctors. Am now in best
of health." Try it. Sample bottles freo
