ty She gafljj lttratu ASTORIA. OREGON: SUNDAY- ...JUNES, 1637 The death of ex-.vice-presi-dent Wheeler, leaves Hannibal Hamlin, who was elected on the ticket with Abraham Lincoln in 1860, the only living ex-vice-president. Geo. H. Pendleton of Ohio, and Wm. H. English of In diana, are the only ones alive who ever received the Democratic nom ination for that office. Of the Re publicans, with the exception of Hamlin, not one survives. It is a great gift to be able to apeak the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. They who devised the formula of the legal oath were aware of many difficulties in the way of ascertain ing the exact truth, uncolored by prejudice and un warped by self interest. Few men can be trusted to state the case of an opponent. Abraham Lincoln had the power to see the trnth on the other side, and if he saw more truth on his own side, to state his opponent's argument in better form than his opponent could do it, and then offset it with more truth on his own side. But that power inca pacitated him for much of the work commonly done in the courts, and he was often accounted a fool for his candor. Our view of a state ment is qualified by our estimate of the man who tells it; and it is impossible, in most cases, to seo that a fact is exactly the same (if it be a fact), whether the knowl-1 edge of it comes to us through a personality of one kind or another. Even the most enlightened per sons are inclined to judge, as to the truth of a statement, according to their judgment of the man who speaks; and, if their judgement of the person is erroneous, their re port of what he says and. thinks will bo false The editor of the American Magazine has made an extraor dinary discovery. He announces that "tobacco was intended for the use of men' The process of in vestigation by which the divine invention was discovered is not disclosed, but the editor uses the 'revelation to protest against the practice of smoking by ladies: The cigar or cigarette is not unbe coming to the most perfect gentle man. But, when employed by ladies, it is put to a use for which it was never intended. And the cigar in the mouth of a woman, becomes her as much as would a costly flag of the richest satin texture, if placed on the begrimed mast of one of the scows that rid our cities of their superflu ous mud and filth. The comparison of smoking wom en to mud scows ornamented with silk flags does not strike us as a happy one. There is a defect in it somewhere. Perhaps some of our lady readers will point it out. The comparison of a cigar to a '5costly flag of the richest satin texture" seems wholly extrava gant, though good cigars are "costly" enough. And the com parison of a woman to a mud-scow, which it is incongruous to adorn in this way, seems quite as much of a reflection on women who do not smoke as on women who do. We get some relief from this diffi culty when we invert the illustra tion, and compare women to silk flags and cigars to mud-scows. But such a comparison is one that the "most perfect gentleman" to whom the weed l,js not unbecom ing" might resent. Nor is the comparison wholly just to the mud-scow, for its acknowledged mission is "to rid our cities of their superfluous mud and filth;" while the mission of tobacco, if we may judge from the protests of many who don't like it, is of a different nature. Renews HerTontli. 2dxs. Phoebe Chesley, Peterson, Clay Co iowa, tells the following story, the truth of which Is vouched for by the residents of the tewn: "I am 73 years old, have been troubled with kidney complaint and lameness for many years: could not dress myself without help. Now 1 am free from all pain and soreness, and am able to do all my own housework. 1 owe my thanks to Electric Bitters for having renewed my youth, and removed completely all dis ease and pain." Two little ones, grown tired of play, Roamed by the sea one summer day, Watching the great waves come and go, Prattling, as children will, you know, Of dolls and marbles, kites and string, Sometimes hinting at graTer things. At last they spied within their reach, An old boat ccst upon the beach. Helter-skelter, with merry din, Over its sides they clambered in Ben, with his tangled, nut-brown hair, Bes3, with her sweet face flushed and fair. Rolling in from the briny deep, Nearer, nearer the great waves creep, Higher, higher upon the sands, Reaching out with their giant hands. Grasping the boat in boisterous glee, Tossing it up and out to sea. The sun went down 'mid clouds of gold, Night came, with footsteps damp and cold. Day dawned, the hours crept slowly by, And now across the sunny sky A black cloud stretches far away. A storm cornea on with flash and roar, "While all the sky is clouded o'er; The great waves rolling from the wast Bring night and darkness on thir breast; Still floats the boat through driving storm . Protected by God's powerful arm. The home-bound vessel, Seabird, lies In ready trim 'twixt sea and skies; Her captain paces restless now, A troubled look upon his brow, While all his nerves with terror thrill At shadow of some coming ill. The mate comes up to where he stands Ana grasp3 nis arm with eager nana3. "A boat has Just swept by," says he, "Bearing two children out to sea. 'Tis dangerous now to put about, Yet they cannot be saved without." "Naught but their safety will suffice; They must be saved," the captain cries. "By every thought that's just and right, By lips I hoped to kiss to-night, rilparil vessel, life and men, And God will not forsake me then." With anxious faces, one and all, Each man responded to his call; And when at last, through driving Btorm, They lifted up each little form, The captain started with a groan "My God!" he cried, "they are my own!"
