The atteution of Barents with ' children to name is respectfully called to the melancholy paragraph which follows. Mr. J , being- on one occasion belated in the mountains of Georgia, stopped at a little cabin and asked a night's shelter of the owner, who was sit ting at the front door in all the luxury of shirt sleeves and a rush bottomed chair tilted well back against the wall. It was hospi tably accorded. A supper con sisting of bacon and corn-bread was set before him; and the con versation turning upon the fine pasture-lands of that section, Mr J modestly insinuated that he would have supposed it possi ble to keep a cow for the benefit of the two childron whom he saw playing about the room. "They don't need it; they are all right as long as that thar lasts," said the father, pointing with a jerk of his thumb to a barrel of whiskey sitting in one corner. Properly horrified, Mr. J ex postulated, but in vain. "It keeps 'em screwed up like a fiddle all the time," explained the fond paient. This incident led to fome further talk about the little ones, and Mr. J affably asked the;r names. "This heie one "-(here the mo ther dragged forward a shame faced youngster in "butter nut"), ''hopin' you'll excuse his looks, was named for my paw Joseph Edward Malcolm Norton Gunter." It was rattled off as one mouth full in a sing sori voice, and Mr. i , to whom comment was dif ficult, said, "And the litle girl?" "Mary Josefine Rhody Cather ine Benjamine Frankline Pales tine Gunter. She was named for my maw," was the reply. Edit or's JDraicer, in Harper's Maga zine for June. The Great Boat Race. Chicago, May 30. For weeks past there has beec no little ex citement over the Hanlan-Gau-daur sculling race that took place to-day over the Pullman course. At Toronto odds were offered against Hanlau that staggered his friends there, but they did not lose faith in him. At Pullman, Gau daur's backer St. John, put up $200 on his man, but most of sh bets were private on even teima. When Hanlan came out in his shirt and trunks to-day his appear ance evoked most favorable com ment and all were enthusiastic over his fine form. Gaudaur in a red shirt and cap and blue trunks, towers over Hanlan physically. The course was three miles in length and the race was exciting the whole distance. Gaudaur won. Time, 20:2'J. Near the little town of Rising Star, in Eastman county, Texas, a curious secret society has been or ganized. The object of the order is to suppress idleness and make everybody work. When an' able bodied man is found to be habitu ally idle he is warned by the committee to go to work or leave the community. This committee is said to have converted the south ern part of Eastman county into a perfect hive of industry. It is an unlawful organization, but it seems ,to be doing some ""good in the world. One wa.y to abolish pov erty is to abolish idleness. A poor ouss of an editor is sup posed to take on active part in everything, whether he feels so. disposed or not. If he takes up one side, the'other cusses him, and vice versa, and if he talccs neither side they both get in and abuse him, so he is bound to be in hot water unless he has the patience of Job, and the courage to toll them to go to grass. Clear the Way Without loss of time, when the Intestinal canal Is blocked up by reason of constipa tion, chronic or temporary. It should bo borne In mind that thb ailment Is prone to become lasting and obstinate, and breed other and worse complaints, Hostetter's Stomach Bitters Is the preclso remedy to re move the obstruction effectually, but with out drenching or weakening the blockaded bowels, a consequence always to be appre hended from the use of violent laxatives, which are among the most pernicious of the cheap nostrums swallowed by the credulous and misinformed. The flat of experience, and of the medical fraternity, sanctions the claims of this standard aperient. Not ot:ly as a source of relief and permanent regular ity to the bowels, liver and stomach, but as a means of remedying and preventing kid ney and bladder troubles, aud- fever and ague, it Is without a peer. Wants no Extra Session. New York, May 30. The World' Washington special says The pressure in favor of an extra session of congress as early as Oc tober has gained such headway that it is thought the president will be forced to yield to the wishes of the party leaders. Cleveland and fcecretarv raircuiiu nave oeen op-i posed to the extra session idea. To a congressman who called at the White house last week to urge the president to call congress to gether in October, Cleveland said he would do it if the congressman would agree to get congress to adjourn and get out of Washing ton before the hot weather sets in next year. In addition to the ex pense of an extra session another reason that has had considerable weight in influencing Cleveland against calling congress together in October is that he will have his hands full for next year, and does not care to have congress here any longer than is absolutely necessary. Mineral- bearing rock is also found."
