Easniussen was yesterday buried, in the hillside cemetery. In the Oregonian and the Eoseburg Irlainaealer occurs the pronoun "I, instead of the customary "We" ii occasional editorial columns. The ladies of the M. E. church will have a social at the residence of Mrs. G. W.' Kucker to-morrow evening. A general invitation is extended. Judge Wm. Strong, who died at his son's residence in Portland last Sunday, held the first term of court ever held in this county, at Skipanon, in 1850. "They say" that Mr. Wolff, of the busted Thompson opera company, owns two candy stores in Chicago. He was certainly able to distribute considerable taff" A second ward resident claims to have a "Mascotte." which insures him continual luck. But a Mascotte not obtained in the salmon season is lia ble to turn out to bo a hoodoo. Friends of the fire department will be glad to know that Monday's ball was a financial as well as a social suc cess. The Woman's Belief Corps set a very fine table, and again yesterday afternoon, displayed a most appetiz ing lunch. In the hillside cemetery is a grave, probably the oldest marked of any grave north of San Francisco. The memorial is a sandstone slab, on which is recorded that he who sleeps beneath bore the name of McTavisb, and that ho was buried there in 1814. Zamloch will be here next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. 'Tis four years since he appeared in Astoria, when he drew crowded houses; he has several new features and will, doubtless, have large audiences. Re served seats may be had at the Crys tal Palace. It seems impossible to keep a good dog, for despite all care, about the time the animal is trained, and of some value to his owner, some broth er of the dog's will either kill, steal or poison the brute. Some clever dogs are now in England, having been stolen from their owners' houses and put on outward bound vessels. Regarding alleged "shanghaing," a prominent Qitizen says that if shang haiers would use his judgment in the selection of worthless characters they would win popular applause. There's something in the idea, but like free trade, interstate commerce and prop erty qualifications for voters, the the ory looks better than the practice would work. Pursuant to call the Astoria loan and building association held a large ly attended meeting at the court house at half past seven last evening when the following named gentlemen were chosen directers: J. P. Dickin son, J. H. D. Grav, F. R. Stokes, E. A. Noyes, A. S. Reed, J. Q. A. Bowl by, C. S. Wright, J. E. Ferguson, J; R. Gilstrap. United States inspectors Ferguson and Xiotan have finished the inspec tion of the little steamer John West. and have issued the papers to her captain, Dean Blanchard. The John West is licensed to ply between this city and Cape Hancock, says the Tel egram, but willjjrobably confine her route to funning between Astoria, II waco and Fort Oanby. The News reports that the season is considerablv behind th'a vnnr. From the signal service office the re port comes that February showed a deficiency of 210 degrees of heat as compared with the normal; March was 83 degrees in excess, and so far, April is about 22 degrees behind. The relative humidity, however, ap pears to hold its own pretty well. i'ehsoxal. Capt. Flavel is expected to return on the 21st. Geo. W. Hume is a passenger on the incoming steamer. Blaine's condition is reporled im proved this morning. The inflam mation of tho lungs has subsided and there has been no fever since Sun day. The physician says that with good weather he will be able to trav el in a few days. DRY WEATHER IN TEXAS. Galveston, April 12. The drouth throughout Texas remains unbroken. The rain on Saturday and Sunday was wholly inadequate. Complaints from the cotton belt are increasing. THE RAILROAD THIEVES. Pittsburg, April 12. The whole wale arrests of the railroad thieves is still the topic. No more arrests are reported so far to-day. It is claimed that of the sixty men arrested not more than two can be acquitted. Dunlap, who confessed, says there was no organization, but tho officers will not believe him. A bill was in tioduced into the legislature last night, intended to cover such cases, as at present there is no law' against breaking open a car unless it is proved that it was broken to commit a felony. FIRE IN ST. AUGUSTINE. St. Augustine, April 12. At 250 this morning the St. Augustine hotel caught fire and was destroyed. The old slave market is also gone and the ancient cathedral is probably ruined; besides several other buildings are burned, including tho county court house and Tedder's museum. The loss to the hotel alone is a hundred thousand dollars; no insurance. STRIKE AT TOTTSVILLE. Pottsville, Penn., April 12. Seven hundred laborers in the iron works here struck to-day because thev were refused an advance of ten per cent. big land purchase. St. Petersburg, April 12. -450 Russian officers have been sent to the penal colony for life. Astonish in; Success. The city counoil met in regular session last evening, Councilman Bergman in the chair. ' A petition from property owners, asking for tho improvement of Cush ing's Court street, was, ou motion, granted. A petition from property owners, asking that tho crossing of Olney and Court streets be built and raised to the established grade, was, on motion, referred to street committee. A petition from citizens nnd tax payers, asking that a terra cotta or other suitable sewer or sewer pipe be laid along tho lino of Benton street, was referred to street committee. A resolution introduced by Coun cilman Carmthers was passed, in structing the auditor and clerk to give notice thatihe council proposed to order the improvement of Cedar street from its intersection with W. 6th to its intersection with Salmon street. " The report of the street superin tendent for March, was read and re ferred to street committee. Tho reports of police judge for March, and city treasurer for quarter ending March 31st, were read and referred to appropriate committees. The following claims were read and referred: C. P. An ordinance to prohibit Chinese business men from doing business on Water street was read first and sec ond times and laid over for further consideration. An ordinance deolaring tho prob blo cost of improving Washington street, from Water to Concomly street, was passed undtr suspension of the rules. The condition of Astoria No. One's engine house was discussed; it was decided, on motion, that the matter of repairing that engine house be re ferred to the committee on public property, with instructions to report at the next regular meeting. The lost steamship Jlexico, was in sured for S150.000 The Escort left yesterday for San Francisco, to have a new boiler put in. The Columbia is duo from San Francisco this merning: tho Oregon sails. The British bark AretJmsa, now 137 days from Liverpool, and due, has .10,000 boxes tin plate for Astoria. The schooner J. W. Seaver, lost on the California coast, was bound for Kuappton. She was insured for $5, 000. The ship Highland Light has been bought by Captain Plummer, and will be placed in the coast coal trade. The steamer Favorite was arrested yesterdav by deputy U. S. marshal J. C. Boss. There will be no deten tion in her trips. The San Francisco tugs Thetis and JEolus have been sold to tho Com- pagnie du Canal Interoceamque, and will be sent down to Panama. The pilot in charge of the Mexico at the time she was wrecked, says that the tide set the vessel on the reef, and that she lies in an easy po sition and can be raised. About tho 15th a whistliug buoy with white and black perpendicular stripes will be moored off the entrance to Yaquina bay, Oregon, about two miles sonthwest of the end of tho jetty and in fif teeen fathoms of water. It is reported that tho Pioneer has been sold to Goodall, Perkins & Co. Negotiations for her sale have been going on for several months. It was supposed that she would go to Sound parties about January, but the prob abilities now favor the truth of the above report. The "Wreck of the Champion. Chas. Willougby, Jr., who was on the sealing schooner Champion, writes that she was caught in the sonthwest gale on Friday last, and her sails blown away, after which she was squared away for the Vancouver shore and ran in on the beach at Nit nat. Out of twenty-eight on board only one was lost, though it was a close call. The schooner capsized, but righted again. "George Shee caup," an Indian, was washed over board after they got into the break ers. Tho schooner is a total loss. Sho was built by Capt. E. H. Mo Almond at Dungeness a few years ago. and was by him sold recently to Chief Peter of the Makah Indians, to be used in the sealing business. She had been used mostly in sealing nnd piloting, and was a fast sailer. Sho was believed to bo insured. Port Tozonsend Argus. Iat Evening Sociable. The sociable given by tho ladies' auxiliarj committee of the Young Men's Christian Association at their rooms last evening passed off very pleasantly. Quite a number of young people were present, and all seemed happy and well satisfied with one another. The singing by the male choir, was very good, and an original reading by Mr. F. Prescott. supposed to be the life of Cbaucer, was much appre ciated. Miss E. O. Warren read an amusing growl from a newly married man. A quartette entitled "Good Night, Kind Friends," brought a very pleasant evening to a close. Unnecessary Misery. The Judge Got the Baby. A habeas corpus case wa3 brought before Judge Dickens for trial last Tuesday for the possession of a col ored baby. There was an able array of counsel for both claimanta. Both sides proved so much that Judge Dickens was in doubt about who was really tho right owner of the child. Bethinking himself of a biblo prece dent, the judge proceeded to grab tho baby by the leg, reaching down into his girdle and pulling out his bowio knife, proposed to do the square thing by the claimants by slicing the baby in two. Both claimants, thinking that the judge had a right to divide the baby, rushed frantically up to him saying: "Uoss, tlon t kill him. You may have him." Henry County (ffa.) Weekly.
