New Yoek, March 29. Alex- anderH, Reavej. a lawyer who was sentenced by the court of gen eral sessions in January, 1885, to two and one half years' imprison ment in the penitentiary for hav ing misappropriated a retainer given him by Mrs. Kathennc Von Keitzenstern, procured a stay of nroceedinffs after he was sen tenced. Since that he has been . confined in the Tombs as the case has been taken to the court of ap peals where it is still pending. If he had been taken to the peniten tiary after his conviction, with the usual allowance for good conduct, his sentence would have run out January 4th, last. He procured a writ of habeas corpus and appeared before Judge Patterson in su preme court chambers to apply for a discharge from jail. The main point made was that the Tombs was a branch of the peni tentiary and consequently he has served out his time and is entitled to be discharged. A decision was handed down yesterda that ho must serve out the entire time; his incarceration up to the present time does not count. After re viewing the facts in the case, Judge Patterson says: "The ques tion is, has the prisoner been con fined under judgment of the courts. The answer must be in the nega tive because he himself prevented judgment being executed by se curing from this court an order for its suspension pending ap peals." Reayy is the first lawyer prose cuted under the code that makes it a criminal offence to accept a retajner -without intention of ren dering; rervice therefor. A Probable Uxoricide. Seattle, March 29. Sunday Mrs. J. E. Spofford died under suspicious circumstances at Slaughter, about twenty-five miles from here. As she was about to become a mother, the neighbors became suspicious and suspected her husband of being the cause of her death. The district attorney and sheriff were notified, and left Seattle yesterday, to investigate. They found sufficient" "evidence to arrest; J. E. Spofford, husband u the deceased, and the sheiill brought him to Seattle this even ing and lodged him in jail. Lie admits giving his wife Indian medicine to cause an abortion. He dug a grave and buried his wife immediately after her death. The neighbors told the officers if they had not made their appear ance they would have lynched Spofford. A Sensational Oase. Chicago, March 29. The in quest begins here to day into the mysterious death of Frederick Worth. On March 20th, Jacob Kuebler, apparently in a trance, told the police to look for the body in the place where it was found, and was ar rested on suspicion. The belief is now prevalent that Kuebler was not the murderer, but was l,hyp notised" by the real-;criminal and made to tell what he did. His only explanation is that while eat ing his supper he had a vision of AYorth s dead body and lelt im pelled to go and report the fact. At first everyone thought him insane. The case is attracting much attention. AN UNDISPUTED TEST OF MERIT. A medicine that has been a house hold remedy for over fifty years and used in that time by more than 150,000,000 persons must have great merit. Such a medicine is found in Brakdreth's Pills. This fact illus trates the value of these pills better than any statement of the proprie tors. It" will be observed that the dose required to cure is small. One or two pills taken every night for ten or twenty dayB will cure dys- fiepsia, costiveness, rheumatism, iver complaint, all female complaints and weaknesses. Handsome men are not objec tionable when they have good sense; but there's the trouble. JVr. O. Picayune. Buclilen's Arnica Salre.
