BOCK, Proprietor, A Xodel American Girl. Tilf AmoriMn rrirt Hint 13 beill immortalized In serial and nv.ele" I for future generations to admire or censure does not represent tnemouui of the majority. Fifty years hence the girl of the present period will live fn the pages of literature as a witty, vivacious, dressy, self-possessed, extravagant being, whom the undercurrent of conversation will then lower to the descriptive terms of pert, saucy, vain, rude, and waste ful Children will look with distrust upon their grandmothers and great aunts as the girls who once snubbed younger brothers and sisters, and condemned theirmothersas being be hind the times, while they took the lead in household customs and soci ety affairs. Our English cousins now look upon our good girls as "fairbarbarians," bold, over-dressed, presumptuous creatures, yetmarvel ously sweet and attractive. - Such individual descriptions do justice'to the average, for throughout our rural districts and country towns, hun dreds of girls may be pointed out who are modest and intelligent, in dustrious and economical. Many of them are self-supporting, and put more energy in a week's work tuan some of their critics use in a whole vear- Let me give you a pen picture of one of my acauaintance3. She is a well educated, sweet tempered girl of nineteen years; is very domestic, and lifts quite a burden from her mother's shoulders by her assistance in house work and entertaining com pany. She teaches eight months of the year in the public school of their little village, and, having learned dressmaking, employs tho vacation in doing the family sewing. Sho is a bright example of sisterly devo tion and filial affection. In all mat ters of society she shows a daughterly deference to her mother's opinions. She teaches in the Sabbathschool, and is an enthusiastic member of a society for literary culture. She can-, not play, but considers it no dis grace; and her course of general reading and her natural conversa tional powers quite overshadow the lack of this accomplishment. This brief sketch is not overdrawn in any particular, and I might give scores of similar examples of self sacrificing girls, who, by teaching, clerking, book-keeping, dress-making, telegraphy, and like employ ments, are earning enough to take them through college, pay off mortgages on father's farm, or sup port a widowed mother; and j'et, if these cirls were suddenly to acouire wealth, their character would still retain the sweet pearl of humanity and the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit. There is a great deal of unjust raillery in regard to the idleness of the girls of the present day. Their grandmothers and great grandmoth ers are pictured as patterns of in dustry, and of course they did excel our young ladies in the execution of hard, physical labor. But in com paring this with the vast amount of social demands and mental discipline wnicn our bright, ambitious girls are expected to meet, we find that their vim and spirit is equal to that of their ancestors, though mani fested in a different direction; and when we contemplate the over whelming burden of advice that is poured upon them through the chan nel of "books and magazines, it seems that they ought to be models of physical strength and beauty, perfectly familiar with rules of soci ety etiquette, and well acquainted with all modern feminine accom plishments. We are glad that they arc willing to accept all the counsel they can profitably use, and that, they are keeping stop with the march of progress and improvement. God bless our brave, self-reliant, Christian girls. Correspondence Rural New Yorker.
