" Well, if you had been where I was last night, you would be just a t 'o?s as I an," .said a man to his w.tV, who had io'.d him he :tee lift J:t- .-o c:o?s, when he ?a:d the i-rtvk-ht paticakos wcie too th:ek n : x)o sour and too touuh. " Oh, I don't know," said the v.'f . as she told the jrlrl to put some moi naking powd.-r tit -t lie paneaki hat ter and a little water to thin it. Von were on a sleeping-car last night, and you always sleep better there than you do at home." " Yes I sleep well enough when the cars are moving, but we got in to the depot from St. Paul at three a. 51., and when the cars stopped I woke up. I wanted to sleep until morning, as the cars stopped here, and so I rolled over to go to sleep. It was just as quiet as death around the depot, until a switch engine be gan to monkey around switching cars. Did you ever try to sleep when an old cow with a bell on was browsing around the street, or in a earden? Then you know how it is. That switch engine would be heard away up in the yard half a mile away, ringing her bell like a cow nibbling a cabbage, then she would work up nearer, and 1 could hear her chew, chew,' and snort as though she had swallowed a turnip and got choked. Then she would hitch on to a car or two, and move away. I would get a little nearer asleep, when she would come back slowly, then stop and blow.her whis tle, as a cow would bellow, and I couldn't get it out of my mind that it was a cow. I found myself dream ing about going down into the past ure barefooted, to drive, up a drovo of locomotives to be milked. I had them surrounded, and their cow catchers all pointed towards the cow yard on the old farm, and they would stick their heads out sideways to nibble grass, and 1 would yell at them, and one ugly old locomotive with cno horn would turn and run into a brindle locomotive and she would run away off in the woods, and I would have to go after her. When I had got her back into the road, all the restof the locomotives were acting up, one was pawing the ground and bellowing, another run ning her horns into the ground and throwing dirt over her back, while others were rearing up and hooking, and acting just like a lot of cattle. The only one that had sense was the old 'bell locomotive,' and she started right along towards the house as soon as I came out of the woods, and the rest reluctantly followed. It was hard work to get the whole drove of locomotives through the gate of the old barn-yard, in my sleep, be cause some would block the way of others, but finally the hired man be gan to set out pails of slop and bran mash, and the locomotive with the bell on ran its cow-catcher clear down into the bran mash, and then the hired girls came out with milk pails and stools and told the loco motives to ' hoist,' and then they sat down right by the tender and pretty soon I heard the milk from the locomotives streaming into the tin pails, and the girls said, ' So, boss,' and I went to sleep. Say, pass them pancakes." " Well, 1 declare," said the man's wife as she passed him the cakes, and pushed the maple syrup to wards him, "you must have been drinking. It does not seem to me that a sane man could imagine all that kind of foolishness, even if he was half asleep. A locomotive is about as much like a cow as you are like an angel." "What do you think?" said the old man, as he emptied the syrup over his cakes. " When I woke up this morning and raised the curtain and looked out of the window, there Avas that locomotive on a sidetrack right beside the sleeper, and the engineer "was right down under it with an oil can, just where I left the hired girls in my dream, but there was no pail of slops, no farm, no barefooted bey, no nothing but an old man in a "small boxstall trying to put on his pants behind a curtain, with a woman in the berth over him calling the porter to bring a fire es cape so she could get down, and she had no shoes or stockings on, and her corset was one of those old-fashioned ones such as you used to wear, mother, at the time Lincoln was elected, and her arms were bare clear to her shoulders, and there were dimples in her elbows, and" " Hush, you old fool. No wonder you couldn't sleep," and the family arose from the table as one man. Peck's Sun. Cure For Piles.
