Discussion and agitation can do no harm to any good cause. A raft belonging to Mr. Cole went ashore at Tongue Point last Wednes day evening. The Gleaner brought half of it down to the city that night, but it broke loose and drifted all over the bay. Some of the residents of Uniontown picked up a good many of the logs yesterday. There were about 300 M in the raft. At a regular meotiug of Astor Lodge No. C, K. of P., last Wednes day evening Messrs. Campbell and Smith were appointed a committee of arrangements to act with Messrs. Cleveland and Jones, previously ap pointed from Pacific Lodge No. 17 to make due arrangements for the anni versary ball to be given next Friday evening. The papers are filled with the ex ploits of Maud the muchly married daughter of Joaquin Miller, "the poet of the Sierras." Maud will be remembered by a good many old Astorians. She lived hero a little girl of 7 or 8, with her mother and brother, Jas. Dyer, twelve or thirteen years ago. Whackeen was at the time in Portland. Everyone knows Joe Charters' five-year-old boy, DelL He is visiting San Francisco now with his mother. The other day he got tangled up a little on locality, and hailed a police man, "I'm lost" "Where do you live?" asked the man in blue. "Why in Astoria, Oregon, of course.' He was taken to headquarters and in a few hours was restored to his mother. Jno. Kobeson, who was sent up from here in January. "S2, for the kill ing of J. M. Bobb, has sent down from Salem a box of toothpicks, but tons, cuff studs, etc., carved out of bone, with a list of those whom he desires they be given to. He is re ported to be in very poor health, and it is thought improbable that he can live another year. On the 4th, Judge Deady rendered a decision regarding the powers and jurisdiction of the Portland city council in the matter of suppressing and preventing opium smoking and punishing the keepers of opium joints. His decision in effect was that no person could under that authority be punished for smoking opium unless it was done in a house or place kept for that purpose. AFPAIRS IN IiOKDON". Loxdok, Feb. 11. All is quiet though there are fears of a repetition of the disorder. Throe hundred un employed men called upon the lord mayor to-day and asked relief for the distressed and unemployed cf the city. He promised to do all in his power to aid them. PKRS'M IL. Scott Bozorth goes lo Salem to day. V. Cook is registered at the Occi dent. Sheriff Boss returned from Port- land yesterday. C. J. Trenchard goes on a trip to Portland this morning. L. E. The Oregonian's Seattle corre spondent says the rioters and their sympathizers call the action of the Guards murder, and threaten to hang the four men who, they claim, did the shooting. Tho men thus marked out are 3 udge'Burke, Rev.'L. A. Banks, E. M. Carr and Frank Hanford. It is not certain by any means that they or either of them fired, but upon them the wrath of the mob falls. It is declared if they are not arrested in regular court that they will be hanged without trial. The next attraction will be Prof. Wm. Cary, the great skater, who will appear at Boss opera house in his skating specialties to-morrow ev ening. The occasion is in tho na ture of a benefit to the Cushing Post Band and for that reason, apart from the fine performance, merits the gen erous patronage of all who appreciate what the band has done, and their efforts in the way of organization and culture. Willie Warren will assist during the evening. The perform ance will close with a social dance. The band will be there in force, and a pleasant evening may be assured all who attend. Who "My name is Charles G, Stewart I will be 31 years old in May. Have no home. Work in the woods when I can get work. Been in Seattle two months and a half. I think I will die from the effects of my wounds, if I get much worse. I don't expect to recover if the pain continues, but will die inside of twenty-four hours. Dr. Smith says my chances are very slim to recover, and I think I believe him, I was standing on New England corner, having come from the wharf, when I saw the Chinamen coming. We came to tho New England corner to stop them and to see where! they were going. When they came up we stopped them till the officers came, to see what they were going to do with them. They came up and started them. We stepped in and said: 'Hold on, gentlemen; what are you going to do with these China men? A man named Dave Webster a tall sandy-complexioned man said: You come along here with us.' I told him, 'No, sir; I have done nothing to go with you for, nor we don't intend to, not a man of us; but we want to move the Chinamen out of Seattle, and do it decently and quietly, if we can. He pulled and jerked me, and another fellow caught me. I think the other fellow caught me. I think the other fellows name is Uarr; he is tall, with black beard, and a law yer; a young man. too this weuster raised his gun and struck me across the head, and at the same time some thing struck me on the arm, and I fell. It happened to be a bullet, in stead of striking me with anything. I found that out after I came up up here. I squatted down with my feet under me, from tho effects of the blow ou the head and wound on the arm. Some man at that minute shot me in the body when I was down. Who it was I do not know, but I think it was that lawyer. I do not know his name. All I know is what I am told, but I think it was Carr, from the place where he stood when they picked mo up. That's all I have to sav. I did not see any body shoot me. I heard Carr say if I did not come he would shoot. Did not see him. This was to-day, the 8th of February, in Seattle. I know Mr. Carr by sight, but not personally, except what I heard people say to day. He is the man who was plead ing Merchant's case with Mr. Haines in the court on Saturday. Of course I don't know whether I will be able to make another statement or not. I do believe I am going to die from the effects of this wound. It cuts my wind off, here on mr right side, near my throat Dr. Smith tells me I can not recover, and as he has doctored me before I have confidence in him. He said that it was a very serious wound, and that I stood good chances of dying in twenty-four hours." A GENERAL INVITATION'. Chief engineer F. L. A Tucson, Arizona, special says: Further information reveals tho fact that the killing of Captain Crawford was not only a cold blooded murder, but that it was merely the climax to a long series of outrages perpetrated upon American citizens. It has long been known that mines of undoubted richness exist in Sonora nnd hun dreds of Americans have flocked to that region to assist in their develop ment The Mexicans have for some months acted with jealous irritability toward these miners, a number of whom have, at various times, been imprisoned upon trivial pretences and heavily fined, while not a few are known to have been murdered in cold blood. There is a great amount of American capital now invested in railroads, mines and stock ranches, and in the opinion of conservative people familliar with the facts, this capital is in danger of being wiped out The Mexicans ha. e made many professions of friendly anxiety to put an end to the Chiricahua outrages, but have all along maintained rela tions with Juh, Geronimo and other Apache chiefs. The Star says it can be shown to the satisfaction of any congressionl committee that a trade has been con stantly kept up with the hostile Apaches atNocori, Bavispi.Basaraca, Janos, Corralitos and Casa Grande, while every obstacle has been put in tho path of the commands sent down in pursuit of the renegades. When ever possible, the officers have been arrested and thrown into prison with common felons. Among those who have been thus treated are Lieutenant McDonald of the Fourth Cavalry and Lieutenant Elliott of eht Tenth Cavalry. They were kept tinder guard until the ap proach of larger forces of American troops, which frightened the Mexicans into liberating them with the usual professions of friendship and regret. One of Captain Crawford's scouts was shot in cold blood in the town of Hnasares two months since. The frontier line of the Mexican states is in a constant state of rebellion with the general government, and the rights of American citizens have been so constantly disregarded that it has become the general feeling among many of them that there is little hope that the government at Washington will do anything for their protection and redress. Nothing but the stern est attitude on the part of the execu tive and congress can allay the feel ing of anxiety in this matter, and the feeling prevails that a reference to the ordinary channels of diplomacy will be playing into the hands of the Mexicans. From the most reliable information there is not the least room for doubt that the murder of Captain Crawford was premeditated with a full knowledge of the fact that his forces were uniformed Ameri can soldiers. No stronger evidence of the soundness of the present position could possi bly be forthcoming a state of things, we venture to think, unequalled in any past experiences, and fully sus tained by the more than handsome daily demand upon the dealers here from their retail customers.
