If we go down a deep mine we find ! that the rock at the' bottom is hotter ' than at the top ; it wc sink a very deu-p well luc water comes up warm. Ilv observations of thus kind it has ! been found that the earth gets hotter the deeper down wc go into it ; the rate at which the temperature in creases is not everywhere the same, but it may be put at one degree Fahrenheit for even' sixty feet wo ti dnvvn. YV"o have been ahlo to f-nt. only a little way down in the earth j nowhere as much as a mile and therefore wc cannot say how far down the temperature continues to rise, or whether the rate at which it increases is the same at all depths. But what little we do know makes it all but certain that the earth is very in ticii hotter inside tiian at the sur face ; for consider what would hap pen if we were to put a coating oi clay some inches thick round a red hot cannon ball. The heat from the ball would travel or be conducted through the clay slowly because clay does not allow heat to pas3 rapidly through it Still there would be a constant How of heat from the ball through the clay, and this heat when it reached the outside of the clay covering would pass away or be ra diated into the air. In the end tho ball would grow cold. Now in the case of the earth, we know that we have an outside cold shell which corresponds to the clay coating. "Whether the earth is hot all through like the cannon ball wo arc not cer tain, but wc have found that a por tion of it, an interior shell, is hotter than the outside crust. The heat from this hot part must be constantly flowing away through the outside shell and passing off into space, and unless there is something which con stantly supplies fresh heat the inside hot shell would before this have grown as cold as tho outside crust. This has not happened, so there must be something which keeps furnish ing the shell with heat, and makes it cool much more slowly than it other wise would. Several possible ways of keeping up this supply of hea have been suggested; the most like ly explanation is that the inside of the earth is verv much hotter even than these warm depths we have been able to get down to. Good Words. Grant in Repartee. 1 remember hearing a conversa tion between Gen. Grant and a Ken tucky girl at the St. Louis Merchants' Exchange in 1S75, when President Grant was visiting the St. Louis Fair. A number of ladies were introduced to the President, whereupon he spoke in very high terms of St. Louis, the fair, etc. "You are mistaken, Mr. President ; wc arc not from St. Louis," laughingly said one of the girls; "we are from Kentucky, a very fine state, you know, which K)ssesscs three things all men of taste must appreciate." Smilingly, the President "a3ked her what they were. She answered, "We have the fastest horses, the prettiest women, and the finest whisky in the world." The President replied, "Your horses are justly renowned : I have some on my farm near hei; yourself and party prove the correctness of your second' observation, but whisky is one of the things that requires age, and your men consume it so fast that it rarely has a fair chance to become good." The girls thought that, if Gen. Grant could not make a long speech, he was apt at repartee. Cure Ifor X'iles.
