Cz) he aHg gjtffovmn. ASTORIA, OREGON: SUNDAY NOVEMBER 8, 1S35 OF VITAL IMPORTANCE. Tin: state legislature meets in special session at Salem to-morrow to discus questions "of vital importance.'.' There are a good many matters "of vital import ance;" more probably than will be reached during the twenty days of the session unless the Solons do more and talk less than they did last winter. Besides the work of electing a senator, which is re ally what the session was called for, it is "of vital importance" to the peace of the state that the tangle be straightened out regard ing the registry law, whicli, if fol lowed as it appears on the statute books would have necessitated an election last June. Its unconsti tutionality in its present shape is apparent It is "of vital import ance," to eastern and western Oregon that a new judicial dis trict be created. The present assessment law is an existing mon strosity that needs attention. The passage of a memorial praying congress for a liberal appropriation for improvement of the bar at the mouth of the Columbia river is also "of vital importance" to every resident, who has a pound of freijjht to send or receive. The remodeling of the present ridicu lous system whereby people are taxed for roads that they never get, is of sufficient importance to merit attention. It is also "of vital importance" that the state treasury be not'depleted by every good natured, but silly effort be ing made successful that seeks to get" a little appropriation ;"and that a senator shall be elected who will not be too marked by improper effort to win the position, to the extent of being even willing to break the oath he took when ad mitted as i: member of that body. The members are ten months older than they were when they met last January. It is to be hoped they have made propor tionate progress in the acquisition of common hor?e sense. THE COXING ENGLISH REPUBLIC. England is now almost a repub lic in evervthiner but name. "The Divinity that doth hedge round) a kinr," never recovered from the I I blow that severed the head of" Chas. I, in 1049, or the open im morality of the four Georges, and in this afternoon of the nineteeth century the sun of royalty is cast ing lengthened shadows preparato ry to the final setting of the gilded crown. Talking on this subject the ed itor of the current number of the Fortnightly Review has a few re marks which shows how plaiuty educated Englishmen are talking. No American editor, criticising his political antagonists, would write freer or plainer than the fol fel fol eowing: "The fetichism whicli is :it the bottom of the monarchical idea has entirely disapjvaied. The sole reason why v still rotnin a hereditary figure-hea-l k in order to evolve a sonnbodv hv means of whom effect is given to th popu lar decision in lavor of this or that person becoming prime minister and retaining this position so long as he has a majority in the house of commons much as the be'es feed a particular grub with royal pollen -in order that it may lay eggs. The arrangement is a curi ous and cumbersome one, and is to politics what John and Richard Dee are to law. It is not proba ble that it will last very long, It has its disadvantages; it serves to create a servile spirit and to strengthen class distinctions. A professed courtier is probabhy the lowest and most degraded speci men of the human race. There is a tendency on the part of the sov ereign to interfere indirectly in political matters beyond the mere nomination of a prime minister; and this interference is usuallv -baneful, because the opinion of a sovereign upon such matters is al most invariably wrong. It is very costly. These evils, however, are not inherited in a monarchy such as ours. There seems no reason why courtiers should be paid large sums for performing their foolish business. The interference of the sovereign in politics might be ren dered impossible. Great expendi ture is not necessarily involved in the idea of a monarchical figure head. The royal family collect ively costs us about one million per annum. This vast sum is ex pended in keeping up the mediae val tomfoolery of a court, and in lavishly endowing every member of the family of the monarch. This must cease. The president of the United States receives a salary of JC10,000 per annum, and provides for his family. Twice this sum, together with a town and country habitation, kept up at the national expense, would be amply suffcient for the incumbent of the throne. If to this be added an annual allowance of .",000 to the immediate heir to the crown, and about half this sum for secre taries, etc., it will be seen that the maximum cost of royalty ought not to exceed about 25,000 per annum, even if a small provision to enable younger children to start in life were included."
