People are always talking about personal fascination, as though it Yvcrc some occult quality of which no account can be given. Some are born magnetic, they say, and some are not and, with the vague term magnetic, thev hand the matter over to the world of mystery. Young girls, for example, arc in a state of chronic bewilderment over the puzzle of this question. They -.tec one of their mates making a" ten-strike among the men at a ball' How does she do it, thev cry. She is not half so pretty as Ellen Jones or Alary Alcott, and there they sit in the corner. She is not as sweet and amiable as this one, as sensible and true as tliat, and yet were she honey and the men bees, no more lively swarming would be wit nessed. There is no use trying to find out the secret ; she has the oc cult quality of magnetism, and that is all that 'can be said. No, young ladies, vou arc simply on the wrong scent. 'Very likely, the open secret lies in no (:harmo"f beauty or intelli gence, but in a quick and electric vi vacity cf spirits that acts like a breeze on the sluggish water, making the waves begin to skip and dance, and so producing an exhilarating effect all round. Now, what is there on the face of the earth people so crave as to be exhilarated, and so delivered from the oppression of lumpishncss and stupidity? These young fellows feel this in the depths. "They are bashful, paralyzed and have nothing to say. Suddenly this young girl wakes them up and they find themselves laughing and rattling away. The blood is cir culating, the feet are dancing, the sense or nonsense, is streaming mer rily through their brains. No wonder each one wants to get into contact with this electric battery. The secret of personal fascination always lies in one single point, that is, in power to excite in another person happy feel ings of a high degree of intensity and to make that eroon identify "such feelings with the charm and 'power of the cherished cause of them. A Mournful Prophecy of "Woes. Prof. Grimmer in a pamphlet nuh lishcd in 1S79 predicted seven years of disaster and famine, beginning with 1SS0 and ending with 1SS7, dur ing which the world will be a hell of strife and carnage. He said: "From 1SS0 to 1SS7 will be one uni versal carnival of death. Asia will be depopulated, Europe nearly so. America will lose fifteen millions of her people. I'esides a plague- we arc to have storms and tidal waves, mountains are to toss their heads thro' the choicest valleys, navigators will be lost by the thousands owing to the capricious deflexurcs of the magnetic needle, and islands will ap pear and disappear in the ocean. All the beasts, birds and fishes will be diseased, famine and civil strife will destroy most of the human beings left alive by plague, and finally two years of tire' lSSo to 1SS7 will rage Willi furv in every part of the globe. In 18S7 the 'Star of Bethlehem' will 're appear in Cassiopia's Chair,' the im mediate results being universal war and portentous floods and shipwrecks. North America is to be again involved in civil war unless a 'Napoleon' arises to quell it, but during these terrible days the PaeiGc states will be a veri table paradise of peace, compared to the hellish strife that will be waged throughout the world. The people that may manage to survive till ISB7 will have reason to be thankful." Cure For riles. Iilcs are frequently preceded by a sense of weight in the back, loins and lower part of the abdomen, causing the patient to suppose he has some effeetton of the kidneys or neighboring organs. At times, symptoms of indigestion are present, ilatulcncv. uneasiness of the stomach, etc. A moisture like perspir ation, producing a very disagreeable itching, after getting warm, is a com mon nttendanl. Blind. Bleeding ami Itching Piles yield at once to the appli cation of Br. Iany persons especially parents object to qnack nostrums as likely to engender or enconrage a love for strong drink. They are right. Bet ter to die of disease than of drunken ness. The use of Parker's Tonic does not involve this danger. It not only builds up the system, curing all ail ments of the stomach, liver and kid neys, but it stimulates withont in toxicating and absolutely cures the appetite for liquor.
