A parly of Frenchmen vrho "were ont sailing on Jamaca bay were caught in a sndden squall the other night and compelled to stop over at one of tbo small hotels at Kockaway Beach. One o them, a late arrival, was greatly exorcised over the dis comforts of the place, and complained bitterly abont the lack of elegance in tbo fittings and tbo inadequacy of tbe menu to satiafy a refined palate. A member of a fishing club, who bed been out crabbing, courteously gave up his room to the foreigner, and shared tbe bed of one of his compan ions. But in vacating the apartment he left behind his fishing tackle and a basketful of tbe crabs he had caught. Tbe Frenchman sought tbo cham ber rather late, and retired at once. During tbe night he awoke, and fan cied he heard a noiso that was not tbe murmur of the surf on tbe bench beneath his window. He sat up and listened. Yes. He wa3 sure of it then. A strange, scratching sound. In a moment ha was out of his bed, for it came from tbe iloor underneath bis feet, and from different parts of it, too. In a fright he groped for his matches, and struck a light. Then with a yell ho mado for tho door. Tbe basket in tbo corner had tilted over and released the crabs, which were straggling about all over. In the gloom tho frightened foreigner could hardly moke out the appear ance of tbo misshapen creatures, and be never stopped to investigate. It was midnight, and a few strag glers were going ont of tho bar-room down staira, when ho burst into it in essentially brief apparel. "Zeo propree-ataireF' be shouted. "Show to mee zeo propree-ataire!'' "What's wrong, sir?" asked that functionary, coming from behind tbe bar. "Wrong, sare?" cried tbe other. "Everysiug is wrong. Zees is one situation diabolique. I cannot of zeo souper eat. I cannot of zeo beer drink. I ask for my chamber and yon show hecm to mo. Dible! Zeo bed so hard is I cannot upon hoein sleep. Some aquatic authorities declare that so far from saving life the art of swimming endangers it; that those who know how to swim take risks to which thoy otherwiso would not ho exposed; and that so far as safety is concerned, knowledge and skill in floating is a far more important and useful art. This theory would seem to be justi fied by tho adventures of a woman on the seashore in Accomac county, Vir ginia, recently, who, while b.ithiug with threo other women, lost her footing, fell into a deep hole and wa3 carried off by the tide. Tbe other women ran to some fishermen a quar ter of a mile away, but they, believ ing the woman to be already drowned and carried out by tho tide would not budge. But two young men got into a boat and pulled over toward tho beach. They found her alive with only her nose above tho surface oE the water. She luckily had on a large straw hat, which stood above the level and at tracted their attention. She had at tended a swimming school in Brook tyn, but was nevor able to learn to swim. She therefore gave her atten tion to floating, which anybody can acquire with a littlo perseverance. When she felt herself out of her depth, sho instinctively threw herself on her back, kept her hands down, breathed through her nose and was rescued. YOUXG 3IEX!-i:EAI this.
